ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) On Sale.

Asus has made its model designation for their new Republic Of Gamers laptop systems a bit confusing. The G73JH- line consists of the following extensions A1, A2, X1, X2. All models are exactly identical except for the hard drive setup and the use of a Blue Ray drive or not. The A1 and A2 models use dual 500 gig hard drives for a total terabyte of storage. The A1 uses a Blue Ray drive and the A2 uses a regular DVD drive. The X1 and X2 models “only” have 500 gig hard drives. The X1 uses a DVD drive while the X2 uses a Blue Ray drive. Per my review title, I purchase the X2 at Micro Center about a month ago, so of course that’s what I’m reviewing. But again, all of these models are identical save for the drives, so a review of one essentially works for any of the other three.

The laptop was ,500 which considering the hardware is quite reasonable. What surprised me however is how difficult this laptop was to find. In the retail market it’s usually the 0 and under laptops that are the big sellers. I thought I would have no problem purchasing a ,500 laptop but I was wrong, they sell out as soon as they come in pretty much (at Micro Center). I find this astonishing considering the state of the economy and the fact regardless of hardware ,500 is expensive for a laptop by anyone’s standards. Recession be damned I guess, not sure where are all of these people are getting the money for such an expensive laptop, were it not for my generous end of year bonus it would not be on my desk either (what I’m typing this review on). Guess lots of credit cards have G73JH laptops on them right now, I refuse to use a credit card, if I don’t have the cash I don’t purchase, period. Anyway, enough about the price and availability difficulties and on to the system.

I like this laptop very much. However since it replaced a seven year old Toshiba I probably would have liked most new laptops on the market today. Like I did seven years ago, I set a budget and then I research voraciously to get the best system for my money. Seven years ago my budget was a ,000 or less, this year I bumped it to ,500 or less. This laptop came in right at that price ceiling. Unlike the Toshiba I bought which was strictly a business machine, I knew this time around I wanted something I could play games with and use for business applications. Being out of the technology loop for so long, I had to catch up on current tech and what I was supposed to look for. My research told me the following: DDR3 memory is good, running at 1,333 MhZ is even better, the video card should have a gig of memory and run at DDR3 at a minimum, a Blue Ray drive and HDMI out will double my laptop as a Blue Ray player, dual core processors are good, quad are better, i7 are the best, hard drive size is not as important as a 7200rpm rotation speed, a 17″ screen is the best compromise between size and laptop weight, and finally looking at speakers specs, peripheral ports, and added niceties such as integrated web cam and backlit keyboard is also important. Whew!!! That’s a lot more info than I had to worry about seven years ago, but armed with that knowledge the hunt began. After a long search (three months) at which point I almost gave up being able to buy the “perfect” laptop for ,500 or under I came across the new Asus Republic of Games line and that was all she wrote. The laptop had everything I was looking for and then some.

The performance of the laptop is well documented, so I’m not going to cover that. Basically it has chewed up and spit out any game I’ve thrown at it. Below are the annoyances/surprises I have discovered using it over the past month:

1. The speakers are incredible! Who would have thought laptop speakers could be so good. These things are loud, clear, crisp, and there is even a small subwoofer on the bottom of the case. I was really prepared not to be too impressed by laptop speakers but man oh man has sound technology improved leaps and bounds since my previous laptop purchase seven years ago. My old Toshiba sounded like a transistor radio when listening to music. The speakers on this ASUS are so good you could be quite content using them as your primary speakers, no external speakers necessary.

2. The track pad works very well, but it can be very difficult to see in the dark as the entire bottom half is matte black. It would have been much better to set off the track pad with a silver surround or something like that, anything to differentiate the pad from the rest of the base.

3. The mouse clicker is very stiff. I was surprised at how much pressure it takes to push down on it. I use the track pad for everything (single or double tap to select) so it’s not a big deal for me, but if you like to use the clicker be aware it’s not a low effort affair.

4. The number pad is a little too squished together for my liking.

5. The Blue Ray drive is unfortunately not a slot load type, but uses the regular archaic tray loading mechanism. It’s also awkwardly placed on the left side of the laptop. Most of us are righties, which means crossing over to insert a CD/DVD.

6. The laptop stays incredibly cool when not gaming, and the fans are whisper quiet. The CPU/GPU area at the bottom of the laptop will heat up a good bit depending on how demanding the game is you’re playing, but never once has this laptop overheated on me. It’s wild to put your hand by the back vents and feel all of the hot air being pushed out, very cool!

7. The monitor is absolutely gorgeous. It’s crisp, bright, and at 1080 p is just really stunning to watch Blue Ray movies on.

8. There is no screen latch. My Toshiba had this and it’s a nice touch to be able to lock the screen to the base.

9. No fingerprint security reader, but I think it does have a facial recognition security system, although I haven’t set it up yet.

10. No separate volume control, or DVD player control, it’s all operated via software or function keys. It was nice having a separate volume control I could access quickly on my Toshiba.

11. I love Windows 7. This laptop is the first time I was able to use it, and Microsoft got it right with this OS. It’s like MS added all of the cool Vista features while making it as fast and as stable as XP. Job well done MS!

That’s it pretty much. ASUS is giving you a lot of bang for the buck. The only reason they can sell a laptop with these features at the price (spec out an Alienware system with these features, I dare you to get it at ,500, more like ,000) is because they manufacture many of the components that go into this thing, therefore they have no middle man costs to contend with. They make the motherboard, sound card, video card, memory, etc. So if you have the cash (or the credit card) and want the best laptop on the market for under ,000 look no further, you’ve found it.

Awesome Gaming / Desktop Replacement Laptop – Blake Robertson – Takoma Park, MD USA
    Heya Everyone,

Just bought this laptop about a few weeks ago and so far it has been a great machine. I am able to play all sorts of graphic intensive games (anyone a Crysis fan? :P , and use Photoshop and video editing software with ease. The laptop has especially been perfect for me while I am on travel (love to watch movies on it while I am traveling from city to city).

Not to mention the laptop definitely stays cool at all times.

I was planning on buying an Alienware laptop but decided on saving my money and buying this, and I definitely have to admit that it was worth my money.

Great Laptop But ASUS RMA is VERY SLOW – Brian Outhwaite –
I was loving this laptop before I attempted to update the bios. I downloaded the correct bios off the ASUS website updated it from the EasyFLASH utility and the laptop never powered on again. Asus received my laptop on 4/23/2010 and it is now 5/14/2010. They are saying that they are waiting on a part. They will not give me an ETA or anything. As I stated above this laptop is amazing but you better not have to send it in for repair or you might be out a laptop indefinitely. As a computer tech this is the worst RMA I have ever experienced. They tried to state that it was my fault for trying to update the bios and it should never be done. In reality they posted a bad bios on the website and I was forced to deal with their terrible RMA service.. Definitely will think twice about buying ASUS in the future, I hope this review helps. I will update this review when I finally get my laptop back…

Ignore the haters – This machine is amazing – M. Charlesworth –
Also ignore people complaining because they were dumb enough to buy the gimped Best Buy version of this laptop. The A1 and A2 are truly incredible I waited a month for mine and it exceeded all of my expectations, I play a lot of games on Steam and also run high end 3d modeling packages on a daily basis and this beast handles all of the openGL heavy apps almost as well as my 00 desktop workstation.
Asus warranty is the best in the business too, even includes a year of accidental damage insurance!
This is a seriously awesome machine, however do you’re homework before you buy, if esata and express card support is important to you then look elsewhere, DON’T (like other cretins on this site) buy a 00 laptop without reading the specs to see if it has what you need.

SOUND TO GOOD TOO BE TRUE – Mr. Chris Teele –
I’ve had my eye on this Gaming laptop for six know in the U.K .Can’t believe this price in AMERICA is under 1700 Dollar’s.Over here it will cost me more than 2000 Dollar’s

ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A2 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)

    Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A2 17-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black) On Sale.

OK so I’ve been using this for about a week now. The laptop was originally preordered in march 8,2010 and was received on march 13,2010…not bad of a wait. A lot of people who preordered on other sites are still in a waiting game. So anyhow let me get on with the review. P.S. to make a summary short the gaming laptop is really a 3 1/2 stars in my opinion but I am hard to please and would recommended this laptop? – yes I would.

The casing: The casing is all black with different materials composing the laptops exterior. The top of the laptop has a heavy and thick rubber that feels good to touch, stays cool, looks good and provides some gripe, but the bad thing about it is that it scuffs easily. Now you might not think this is a big deal but when you start to see scuffs on your new laptop out of no where well… the armrest has a different feel from the top of the laptop and less rubbery more like a semi plastic version which is by no means bad. There is a grill that covers the speakers at the top of the keyboard. Because of this there will be a lot of dust that may accumulate there and is hard to clean. There is no volume rocker or other media controls on the outside casing which makes it hard for anyone watching a movie or playing games. Two vents in the back which drives the hot air out and also a couple of vents underneath the laptop to draw in cool air. The panels to the casing is not that good for normal maintenance, what I mean by this is when you have to clean the two fans out which your supposed to do every month or so, it will be difficult because the access is on the top, so you will have to remove the screen and the keyboard to reveal the fans. The bottom side do however have easy access if you want to upgrade rams and hard drives.

screen: the screen is all glass not that edge to edge design but still pretty good. It is very bright… makes my old gateway laptop screen look dark and faded out. It’s 1920×1080 resolution is awesome, however if the laptop is ever outside it will produce a annoying glare. Plays bluray movies and game all beautifully. A 2.o Mp webcam sit on the top of the screen.

Keyboard: the keyboard is kind of bad. At around the middle the keys when pressed will flex and the keys will have a kind of spongy feel. There was a guy on youtube who said that it prevented him from typing too fast and I laughed at him, that is until I got my unit and started typing on it. The keyboard in particular has a long response time so when typing there will be a lot of compound words being formed. Is the keyboard durable and will it last? well I think it will last if you take care of it but I highly recommend a external keyboard if you are planning on typing on this laptop alot. Still it sure is nice looking when lit up though, well my friends and family were impress by the look of it anyway. The other bad thing about the keyboard is the arrow keys. For some reason asus grouped them together between the qwerty keys and the number pad so it makes it kind of weird.

performance: well the performance depends on alot of what you do even though it is heavily spec. If you are planning on playing games and running intensive programs on this computer than you will definitely see alot of improvements depending on how old and under spec your computer is now. My old Pentium M gateway is still running strong but when I tried to load up batman arkham… well it was so slow the computer just kind of gave up trying to install. The g73 however loaded in about 15 minutes. When surfing the web Youtube videos loads a few seconds faster and the responsiveness of loading pages are a tad faster as well compared to my old computer. In short if you are planning to use this computer as a hardcore gaming or multimedia entertainment system that I think you will be impressed, but if you just go online and use standard office products well maybe you should just save your money and get a cheaper computer.

track-pad: huge track pad that has multi touch and scrolling feature on the side. Not very well positioned but you can disable it so your thumbs don’t accidentally activate it while typing. The track pad itself is smooth and glides easily but the double tap can sometime be unresponsive and the single click button can be hard to use as it takes a bit of pressure to actually click on it.

For me I had to spend about a day deleting bloatwares and tweaking the computer to my preferences. So software wise well once your done you will have a barebone laptop with windows 7 home premium 64 bit and some utilities support. One of the biggest gripe for me was even though there was a ton of useless bloatware there was no bluray playback software. So basically you can’t play bluray movies on the laptop from stock. You will have to download 3rd party software like powerdvd or windvd to play movies. Asus free windvd 8 was a bad program and caused a lot of pause and skips during the movie. It does come with trendmicro and windows firewall but I had deleted and use other 3rd party software which they are much better.

The computer stays cool for the most part but summer haven’t come yet so I will have to wait and see. The ati graphics card tend to be hotter than the cpu so the fan on the left side gets little more noiser but overall I can’t complain about fan noises. For those who wonder if you need to upgrade thermal compounds than the answer is no unless it makes you feel better and you got the money to blow.

There is 2 hard drive both partitoned into 2 parts so when you look under specs it will show up as 4 parts. At 7200rpm the computer booted up in about 45sec. I have seen people upgrade to ssd and boot up in less than 20 sec. But for the price I think I will stick with the 7200rpm seagate hard drives.

ATI HD 5870 mobility runs good and though I have yet to upgrade to 10.3 catalyst the system still plays most games I throw at it with great fps. However the gpu can run pretty hot. For those than wonder if you can upgrade the gpu, well it is no soldered to the board so….?

My laptop came with 8 gigs of Kingston 1333mhz rams so that will probably last for the life of the laptop without a need for upgrade even though you could take it up to 16 gigs. From my use I have not experience any latency problems.

The speakers are good it actually gets pretty loud without distortions but the sub-woofer at the bottom is barely noticeable.

The backpack and mouse that comes with the A1 and A2 are pretty good, for people who said the mouse cannot be use for regular purpose well I have to disagree.

well I doubt I have cover all points since this is my 1st review ever but overall I like this laptop even the keyboard really bothers me and I will have to plug in a external keyboard the machine itself will work great as a gaming and entertainment system. Make sure to have 6 blank dvds to make the recovery disk as Asus did not include one. If you have any question just ask under reply and I will update. Hope this helps

Why is the price higher on Amazon? – Teacher2 – U.S.
I’ve always found Amazon to have the lowest prices due to its buying power. And yet, when I looked around on the internet for the G73JH-A1 I found it for about 0 less in a few places. What’s with that?

    ‘Gaming’ review – J. Alix – US
You can find a ton of reviews regarding the hardware and you can compare similarly configured gaming notebooks and you’ll see that this is HUNDREDs of dollars cheaper. I’ve had the machine for almost 2 weeks, gaming about 1-2 hrs a day.

    Pluses
-have not had a single technical issue
-function keys for volume and brightness do not bring me to the desktop when playing games (like it did my previous HP)
-HDMI to HDTV is plug and play (video and audio)

    Now for the Gaming part
I play around with AA (anti-aliasing) from highest and then bring it down until very smooth playability. These are the games I found to push the notebook the most (settings to be very playable at native 1920×1080, I don’t use vsync):
Crysis/Crysis Warhead – no AA, almost all on High/Gamer settings
    Batman AA – All Max
    RE5 – All Max
Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions – HDR at medium, all else at max
    Prototype – All max
    Wolfenstein – All max
    Borderlands – All max
Red Faction Guerrilla – No AA, almost all on max

Every other older game (even newer ones), the G73 just breezes through (such as GoW, UT3, Dark Void, L4D, TR:Underworld), I’ve found it handles the Unreal engine quite well.

I can’t believe how this notebook handles games at 1920×1080. Stays cool and quiet. Audio is pretty decent, even takes care of Prototype’s low volume issue (just crank it up!). I’ve been gaming on laptops for more than 12 years (no space for desktop rigs) and I’ve never had a gaming laptop, always had to compromise the graphics. Not anymore. Playing at 40-50 frames/sec is surely a welcome change.

only laptop you will need – Y. Kim – Dallas, TX
just got the laptop abut 2 weeks ago, ordered it on pre-order. so far i am thoroughly enjoying the laptop. fast, reliable, clear and very functional. a bit heavy to be carried around as a laptop but it was a desktop replacement so i got what i asked for. you will have to download the windvd for bluray on asus website to watch bluray movies. i have tried playing a few games modern warfare 2 on max resolution and everything is running smooth as ice. i highly recommend the laptop. added plus, get it from Amazon, their customer service is impeccable. i ordered mine when it was priced at 99 and when it was shipped i noticed the price had dropped to 48. called the cr and they were kind enough to credit the difference. NICE!!!

ASUS Republic of Gamers G51J-3D 15.6-Inch 3-D Gaming Laptop (Black)

    Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

ASUS Republic of Gamers G51J-3D 15.6-Inch 3-D Gaming Laptop (Black) On Sale.

Had this laptop for nearly a month, and my experience with it ranges from 2 to 5 stars, depending on what I’m doing. I was considering giving this 3 stars overall, but considering the price, I think it deserves a 4 star, though it really depends what you intend to do with this laptop. Note that this is a long review. I tried to summarize everything in the first sentence of each bullet so people can skim through it quickly if they aren’t interested in the details.

    Pros:
    - Good value! An Alienware laptop with nearly identical specs cost about 50 the last time I checked, and that’s without 3D Vision (which retails for about 0), a second hard drive and only 1 yr warranty. Also, Amazon dropped the price, twice, since I bought this (probably trying to clear stock as G51JX-3D is coming out – almost identical computer except they replaced GTX 260M with GTS 360M, which is slightly weaker but runs cooler, and replaced the 2nd HDD slot with 2 RAM slots)

    - Screen looks great! Not sure if it’s the 120Hz or the LED backlight, but this screen blows my old laptop away (Compal FL90). A lot of my games look noticeably better on this screen (not because of extra fps, I’m talking about old games where my old laptop runs great as well)

    - 3D was surprisingly good! 3D actually was not the primary reason I bought this laptop, so I wasn’t expecting much from it. But I totally don’t regret getting the 3D (I wanted a G51J-A1, but you can’t buy them brand new anymore – I wanted the 2nd Hard drive, which is not available on the G51JX-A1 – the replacement for the G51J) For those that see a lot of flicker in 3D, try turning up your screen brightness – when my screen is near 100% brightness, the flicker completely goes away for me and my wife. I’ve put additional comments on games I got to work in 3D at the bottom of this review.

    - 2 hard drive bays in a 15″. I couldn’t find a single other 15″ laptop out there with 2 hard drives. Useful if you want to have a solid state hard drive (SSD) but don’t want to shell out 0+ for a 160GB SSD (I got the 0-ish Intel 80GB SSD for running the OS and some of the newer games and stuck all my old games and documents on the 2nd HDD).

    - Full-sized back-lit keyboard. The back-lit keyboard is actually pretty cool and is actually useful when playing 3D – the shutter glasses make everything look darker like sunglasses do when active. The backlight makes it a lot easier to find the keys.

    - Runs graphics-intensive games fluidly. I ran Oblivion, everything on max on max resolution (which is only 1366×768 on this laptop though) with 3D on, went outdoor and the scenery looked awesome! Didn’t measure the framerate, but didn’t notice any stuttering at all, even during combat (CPU-intensive games are a different matter though, read the Non-G51J-3D Specific Cons section).

    - Driver disc lets you select what bloatware to install. If you reinstall Windows 7 using the recovery disc, the first time you boot up, the drivers disc lets you select what bloatware to install, instead of forcing you to install everything then uninstall stuff you don’t want (drivers disc is bugged though, see Cons section). There’re actually a number of useful programs, but still a lot of bloat imo.

    - Lots of ports. Has modem, LAN, VGA, HDMI, card reader, e-SATA and 4 USB (might have missed some, check the official specs). There’re 2 USBs on each side of the laptop, so you don’t have to worry about a big USB device blocking off all your ports. However, you’ll probably end up using all four at once most of the time: 1 for mouse, 1 for 3D IR emitter, 1 for laptop cooler (strongly recommend one), leaving only 1 USB left for your flash drive.

    Cons:
    - GPU comes underclocked. Probably due to heat and power consumption issues. You can easily clock the GPU back up to NVIDIA’s stock clock using the latest Forceware, but then you’ll need to watch the temperature much more carefully.

    - CPU throttling. The CPU supposedly throttles (or clocks down) if the laptop draws too much power. I haven’t yet observed this in any of my games, so I can’t comment much. Google “asus g51j throttling” for more info. Note that various other gaming laptops have similar issues, including the Alienware m15x.

    - Heat. This is an issue with all gaming laptops, but is particularly an issue with this model. Running Furmark at 1366×768 in a room at 20C resulted in the GPU running up to 94C for me (no cooling, though adding my targus cooling fan only trimmed 2C from that). I think the GPU can take that kinda temperature, and real-world gaming is usually less intense than Furmark, but when summer comes and my room is near 30C, this will become an issue. Also, the CPU shares the same heatsink as the GPU, though I never managed to push the CPU above the mid 70C, even when running Prime95 or Cinebench.

    - Warranty void if sticker removed. There’s a sticker over the heatsink saying that warranty is void if removed, so basically, I can’t replace the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU to help with the heat issue without voiding my warranty >.>

    - BIOS is extremely basic. I’m using the unofficial BIOS version that supposedly fixed the BSOD issue (google “G51J BSOD fix”). The only useful thing you can do in the BIOS is changing the boot order. No turning off hyperthreading, setting clock speeds or anything you’d expect a regular BIOS to have (and I’m not aware of any secret key combos that unlocks more advanced functions). Not an issue if you never mess with the BIOS, but rather disappointing for people that want to squeeze more performance out of their machines.

    - Low battery life. To be expected for a gaming laptop, though the battery life on this computer is particularly bad. I get slightly over 1 hour when doing actual work (minimum brightness, balanced power scheme, surfing the web, transferring files to and from a flash drive etc.) Others have reported squeezing out 1.5 hours on more aggressive power saving options. You can replace the 6-cell with a 9-cell battery from ASUS, though it’s 9 the last time I checked, and it’s out of stock. I’m planning to buy a universal external battery pack before I travel with this.

    - VGA out sucks, though luckily HDMI works. I’ve read a number of reviews online before I bought this, and I’m surprised no one brought this up, so maybe I just got a lemon. The VGA connector on my G51J-3D is very loose and flickers majorly when I connect it to my TV. The exact same cable and TV gave me flawless display on my old laptop, so I know the issue is the connector. HDMI works fine and looks great, so it’s not the GFX card either (the computer won’t detect my TV on HDMI without a reboot though, can’t figure out whether it’s Windows 7, my TV or the laptop causing problems). If you’re thinking of connecting this to your old CRT monitor for 3D, it may not work out.

    - Recovery discs are bugged. I tried reinstalling Windows on my new SSD which I swapped into the laptop, and when it asked for the drivers disc, it gave me a file not found error and I was forced to do a hard reboot as it won’t move on. The reboot led to a BSOD. Using the recovery discs I created using ASUS’s software didn’t work either. Interestingly, the second time I tried the recovery discs (not the ones I made) turned out fine, so maybe it was just bad luck (still gave me the file not found error, but hard reboot did not lead to BSOD the second time. Windows 7 now running without problems on my SSD).

    - Drivers disc doesn’t respond once some drivers are installed. Not sure why, but when some drivers are installed, the drivers disc autorun no longer works – trying to view the contents of the disc in Windows Explorer will also result in a moving green bar that never stops moving. The workaround I found was to put the driver disc into a non-ASUS computer, copy all the contents over to the hard drive of the G51J, running setup.exe from the hard drive solved the problem.

    - Lid design and lighting. I’m in the camp that hates the lights, especially the fact that you can NOT turn off the lights on this model unless you open up the laptop and cut some wires (for the record, I also do not like the alien head of Alienware, or anything on the lid that screams “hey, look at me!”). The lights blink when the laptop is in sleep mode, so I usually shut down instead of sleep (boot time is slightly over 1 min with my SSD). The upside is that the real thing looks less ugly than the pictures imo – it’s darker and doesn’t look as flashy from a distance.

    - Size is more like a 16″ rather than 15″. However, the hardware packed into this thing usually results in a 17″, so maybe you can say the size is more like a 16″ rather than a 17″.

    - Looks like it’ll be replaced by the G51JX-3D. The JX is supposed to come out around now. The G51J-A1 has been replaced by the G51JX-A1 already. As described earlier, the JX trades 2nd HDD for more RAM and trades the underclocked GTX 260M with a higherclocked GTS 360M (benchmarks show that they’re actually comparable surprisingly, though GTX 260M at stock clock will still outperform the 360M, assuming you don’t fry your computer). If you think you need 6GB RAM or more or don’t care about the 2nd HDD, you may want to wait (the JX is not on Amazon yet, but you can pre-order it at various resellers). If you want the 2nd HDD, might want to buy the J soon before retailers start stocking up on the JX variant.

    Non-G51J-3D Specific Cons:
    - This section contains cons that are specific to all computers using these components, not just the G51J-3D

    - Windows 7 incompatiblity. Certainly not as bad as when I first started using Vista, but I have a good number of older games that just won’t work on Windows 7. The most annoying thing for me so far is that games such as Starcraft will have inverted colors when run on Windows 7 (killing explorer.exe before starting the game is supposed to fix the problem, but not exactly an ideal solution). I get round this by installing Starcraft under Win XP in Virtualbox (though you’ll need a copy of XP to do this – I bought one ‘cos I hated Vista so much).

    - i7 720qm seem to suck for single-threaded apps. It seems that almost every gaming laptop has this processor these days. The processor performs great in benchmarks, but in the real world where most of the applications are still single-threaded (especially for games), the 720qm’s performance is quite mediocre and the quad core hyperthreaded (giving 8 logical cores) is probably way overkill for most people. My old laptop running Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz, 800MHz FSB running on DDR2 667 MHz RAM actually runs X3TC better than the i7 720qm (it stutters less on the i7 but the Core 2 can handle the highest graphics setting (AA and AF off) in a busy sector while the i7 will slow to a crawl; note that X3TC is notorious for being CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound, so it may not matter to you if you don’t play that game). Turning 3D on and off and changing AA and AF from off to max made 0 fps difference in a busy sector (measured using Fraps), and GPU-Z never shows the GPU above 70%-ish load in the game, so I’m pretty sure it’s not the GPU causing problems. Similar observations for a busy park in Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. The only instances where I observed i7 being a lot better than my core 2 is at bootup and when running AVG virus scan (the scan is A LOT faster, and it’s not just the SSD as I had a lot of stuff on the regular hard drive). i7 can also handle crazy multi-tasking such as running AVG virus scan, spyware doctor scan, windows defender scan all at the same time while surfing the web with my various sidebar apps active, but unless you use your computer regularly like that, you won’t see the benefits. It looks like the i7 620m, which is 2 core instead of 4 but higher-clocked with lower power consumption may have suited my needs better, but when I bought this computer, there weren’t any laptops with the 620m equipped with a respectable GPU, probably ‘cos the 620m launched only a while ago.

    - NVIDIA 3D Vision uses active shutter glasses, not the polarization technology used in 3D cinemas. In another words, if you want to have friends over to watch you game in 3D, they need to buy their own 0 glasses, not the ones you get for free in 3D cinemas. If you want the polarization technology, consider the Acer Aspire model. I don’t think that is capable of turning regular PC games into 3D though.

Games I got to work in 3D:
    - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – looks great!
    - X3: Terran Conflict – looks good, the boxes around objects appear very close though, making it hard to focus on the object.
    - Neverwinter Nights 2 – haven’t tested it out much, but it works. Note that Neverwinter Nights Platinum (the original) doesn’t seem to work unfortunately.
    - Sid Meier’s Pirates – turn off trilinear lighting or something like that and adjust the convergence a bit. It can make the game look really good!
    - Mini Ninjas – looks great!
    - Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 – looks great especially when riding the coasters!
    - Command and Conquer: Renegade – need to adjust depth and convergence a bit, but can look really good!
    - Command and Conquer: Generals – works in 3D, but game stopped working when I patched it, so haven’t tested it much. Note that C&C original, Tiberium Sun, RA, RA2 do not work in 3D. No 3D Starcraft either.
    - Galactic Civilization II: Ultimate Edition – custom ships look really cool!

Overall, this is a great laptop for playing GPU-intensive games and the 3D definitely adds replayability to older titles and is entertaining. I would give it a 5 stars for 3D gaming especially given the price of this thing! It’s also great for multi-threaded apps, but if you run a lot of single-threaded cpu-intensive apps and games, the performance will likely be disappointing. Together with the underclocked GPU/heat issues, limited BIOS, poor VGA port and buggy drivers disc pushed me into the 3/4 star territory. Lid design and short battery life may also turn some people off, but for a gaming laptop, these are common issues.

    crash central – J. friedman –
I had high hopes for gaming in 3d. especially Battlefield Bad Company 2
Unfortunately I kept getting the blue screen crash for hardware problems.
In addition it ran very very hot.
When I called Asus their only answer was to wipe the hard drive and start over.
Since I had only had the computer a few days that seemed futile so I returned the
computer to Amazon and am out the .00 in shipping and insurance.
Maybe I had a lemon, I hope so for Asus’s sake

    3D Done Wrong – 3D pro User – Florida

If you are considering this laptop as a 3D gaming device, you will probably be satisfied. If you want a screaming 2D computer, you will be elated (it’s REALLY fast).

If you are using it for 3D photo and video, forget it. This unit has apparently been crippled on purpose to NOT be compatible with the current standards of the industry in 3D software and hardware.

For instance, standard 3D glasses at won’t work, but their 0 ones do. Their stripped-down version of StereoScopic Player works (with shadows on the right and left side of images), but goes into “old-school” mode (red-blue 3D glasses) when an external 3D compatible projector is plugged in. There are no settings to overcome this that I see, and I’ve been doing 3D for 10 years. Upgrading to the full version of StereoScopic Player causes other problems, possibly due to “blocks” in the software/hardware of the laptop. Their 3D IR transmitter turns itself off sometimes, and the “on” button does not work. Basically, it seems that they do not want you to use a projector (and possibly even and external 3D monitor), don’t want you to use cheap glasses that work better than the ones supplied, and don’t want you running any “foreign” 3D software. Such a shame.

My cheap 00 mini-desktop has none of these problems, works with projectors in any mode, any glasses, no shadows, no software quirks. Just great, realistic 3D video and pictures, that I don’t have to pay 0 per person in order to enjoy. Some people are working on software and hardware “hacks” that may possibly unleash the 3D performance that this laptop should have.

There is nothing bad about this computer at all…except the battery life…everything running fully after 10 min i have about 20 percent battery left but if you use the right softwareu can clock it down to a reasonable speed and the battery will last up to 2 hours almost!!!

ASUS Republic of Gamers G51JX-X3 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (Blue) On Sale.

Pros: This product is rock solid so far had for 2 days so far. I have stressed this thing as far as I could. This machine handles almost all the games I play at full settings (Wow, LOTRO, WC3, Also some different FPSs.). This machine runs things fast program wis0e. All video buffering on this machine is lightning fast. The video on this machine is almost top of the line for a laptop. Intel + Nvidia, Mind blowing combination(Almost 10,000 3DMark06 score). This laptop comes with the Turbo Boost option. This option is a performance overhaul, Caution WILL Light it up. The backlite keyboard is nice if you do gaming in the dark like I do. The display on this machine is gorgeous. Full 1080pHD is the only way to go. Windows 7 really takes full visual advantage that this machine can offer.

Cons: This thing gets hot when at full performance.I will be purchasing a cooler. This is probably necessary no mater which brand gaming laptop you will purchase. The battery life on the power saving mode is about 2 3/4 hours. This is a short battery in comparison to other laptops however, This is a desktop replacement machine(should be plugged in anyways). The keypad is rather small. They could have made it a bit bigger but I personally still like the fact of a number pad.

Other Thoughs: Really perfect for me. I would suggest to my friends. This is a Sick bang for the buck, this machine should probably be in the low 1,400 ranges but is so low(in my opinion).

    Great comp…but got a lemon. – D. Angeloni – Orange County, CA
I bought the G51jx-x3 computer after doing a lot of research, knowing it was the best bang for the buck out there…and it is. Unfortunately after 30 mins of firing it up and downloading Window 7 updates I started to receive random blue screens; this consistently happened every 3-30 minutes. I thought I unfortunately had the same BIOS problem that some are complaining about who own a G51 series laptop. I then tried a system restore which failed to solve the problem; I knew at this point I had a hardware problem. Windows memory checker confirmed this. Got ASUS tech support on and they walked me though everything I already had done…after an hour they finally came to the same conclusion I had already come to. Shipped the package off to them today; they said it will take 3-4 business days to look at and repair. I’m looking forward to getting it back as it looks and feels great. Minus the bad hardware (RAM by Kingston) I would recommend this computer if you are willing to look past ASUS lack of QC. At least their support is decent so far.

    RMA’d after a week… – D. Fowler – Northern Virginia
I didn’t purchase this through amazon, but I usually read amazon reviews when I make my purchasing decisions so I thought I would post my issues.

For the good: This is a very powerful gaming laptop. This is my third ASUS and I have been very satisfied with their products in the past.

For the bad: I had mine for one week and had really just completed loading up my games, and the GPU failed. It would sit at 90C for about 8-9 minutes then complete failure. This is not an OS (BSoD) issue, the actual machine would ‘pop’ and shut down. Who knows, maybe I finally got the lemon, but its still annoying. This laptop gets HOT and from my point of view, ASUS has not resolved the heat issues from the 260 and just re-branded to the 360 with this laptop to get them out the door. I’m waiting now for ASUS to DOA mine and send me a new one. I hope it works this time….

    Good luck.

LAPTOP W/O BACKPACK & MOUSE – David Willis – Fort McCoy, FL.
It does seem ridiculous at times how orders can become troublesome, ASUS laptops appear to be in this category. Two bad ASUS, the N10JH-A1 blue screened repeatedly trying to get to desktop and constantly when trying to use HDMI which ASUS could fix and returned to Amazon, bag made it and mouse didn’t. . The N61JQ-X1 blue screened during initial setup, blue screened twice during internet streamed movies. Mouse missing. Advertised with premium amplified sound, added cone speakers etc. by Amazon and Asus- hardware features which didn’t exist.

This unit, an Asus G51Jx-X3 was purchased more for specs and graphics ability than gaming which we don’t do (PS3 for grandkids). Amazon ad has the Republic of Gamers Laptop backpack and the Razor optical mouse, as does Asus ad, and about every UTube or review seen. Our unit received today, NO BACKPACK OR MOUSE. HAVE EMAILED AMAZON, AMAZON CORPORATE AND CALLED COMPUTER SALES. WILL REPORT AND UPDATE REVIEW WHEN AMAZON’S RESPONSE TO THESE DEFICIENCIES IS FINAL.

QUESTION: Is there anyone else who has noticed the circular grill (2-1/2-3″) on bottom of laptop for bottom fired subwoofer touted in many reviews for all Asus G 51 units is MISSING? Would love to hear who has or who hasn’t. Unfortunately this was one of deciding factors for BETTER sound that we were looking for when it wasn’t in the N61Jq (look at Asus website, products, laptops, gaming laptops, then click N61, then N61Jq, look at description and watch video to see what we are talking about) Amazon is changing their ads after our complaint on this issue.
