ASUS K52JR-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) On Sale.

I could not be happier with this laptop. Aesthetically, I love the brown and that it’s not a boring black laptop. The size is a bit large for me and the lacquer finish around the screen is annoying as it reflects light. And a 0.2MP webcam? Grainy and crappy. For this machine I would expect a 2.0MP. I honestly thought it might be a misprint. It is not. When I skype there are issues and they are usually my fault.

I do not use this laptop for gaming. No offense to all you gamers but I don’t have time for such luxuries. All the 4 star ratings talk about the screen resolution being subpar. I guess since I don’t play Halo on it I don’t see anything but a crisp LED screen.

I need this machine for home use (iTunes, internet, skype) but also for work (Cisco soft phone, ERP, SketchUp, Layout). My work laptop is about 15 pounds with a 17″ screen and is a beast to travel with. Since I frequently am out and about I needed something lighter and more compact. I basically need it to perform like a Mac but be a PC. One of the key features I wanted was a dedicated graphics card, as for work I use SketchUp and 3D rendering software (like the web based Google plugin O3D) and needed this to be quick. The 1GB dedicated graphics card from ATI is perfect. The only issue I have is the O3D plugin does not yet work with the 64 bit operating system. Having a 64 bit system is a good thing but be prepared for issues. Not everything is designed to work with it yet.

I am very happy with the sound system and the facial recognition software so I don’t have to login with a password. I also love the keyboard. The Mac like chicklet keyboards have the keys so close to each other I frequently mistype, but this keyboard is the same style but has the keys more spaced out.

I’m sure I have lots more to experience as its only been a month but so far I am extremely happy with my ASUS.

I have loved this laptop since I just powered it up. It is better the the Dell, Sony, HP, and Toshiba’s I have used for personal or business.

So, after doing a bit of research, I decided to purchase this laptop. For the specs it seemed like a great deal. Had decent reviews on here and [...]. Other Asus laptops seemed to have decent reviews as well. Well, the first one shipped to me was dead in less than 5 hours. It just shut itself off while I was using it and never powered back on after that. Thankfully, Amazon was great and sent me a new replacement no questions asked. I used that one for about a month. I shut it down one night. Next morning, tried to power it back on. Nothing. This time I had to send it in to ASUS. So, I was without a computer for about a week. I’m now on my 3rd one. Apparently this is a common problem for this series. Just google “Asus laptop won’t power on”. Sounds like they may have used some bad components or it overheats easily. I didn’t abuse this thing either. Just used it for standard stuff. Work, internet, email, and watched a few videos. Very disappointed.

Good Computer – Rocket Ron – PA
I have had the laptop for about a month and am very happy with it. The only downside is the 15.6 widescreen cuts some normal web pages. That is not the laptop fault, I should have checked and maybe gone to a 16″. Still the weight and looks of the ASUS is top notch. Performance is great even on engineering 3D models I some time run.

ASUS N71JQ-A1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) On Sale.

I bought from another etailer, but I find amazon’s reviews very helpful so here goes:

General Info:

The actual dimensions of this unit have been misquoted on many web sites so here they are. (16.50″ x 11.25″ x 1.90″)
My laptop came from _&_.com with 2 320 GB 7200 rpm HDs (mine came with Seagate ST9320423AS), there is no RAID controller.
Connectivity 1 USB 3.0, 3 USB 2.0, 1 HDMI, 1 eSATA, 1 VGA, 1 Giga-Lan Ethernet, 1 Express Card Slot
4 Gigs DDR 3 1066 Memory, you may get 1333 depending on what ASUS had available

Pros:

Excellent build quality, This laptop is a beauty, It looks black unless you look close or have it outdoors. I love the keyboard, some have complained about the shorter shift key on the right side, it is a nonissue for me. Some pics show the backslash key on the left side of the keyboard. Not true; it is above the enter key where it should be. Touch pad is great, but I use a Logitech Anywhere wireless USB Mouse.

The 1600 x 900 Display is good for a TN, but it would be much better if they had used an eIPS panel like the Dell 2209WA. I am glad I spent a little more and got the higher resolution screen, Blueray Drive, and 2 yr warranty (mail in the warrantee card within 60 days after purchase and get a second year of Accidental Damage Warranty)

Very good performance Windows 7 scores (6.9, 5.9, 6.7, 6.7, and 5.9). This laptop is exactly what I was looking for fast and QUIT, There has been some controversy about the fan cycling on and off in short bursts. If you have this problem uninstall the Power4Gear software and wait for ASUS to update it. You do not really need it anyway. When the fan is running it is not very load.

Cons:

Cr_pware what else. This can be removed with a little program called Decrapifier. When the laptop boots for the first time it will ask you to build a set of 4 restore DVDs. I feel that this is a total waste of time and it takes forever to run. Just download a trial copy of Win7 and use the COA code from the bottom of the laptop. Then run the Drivers disk that comes with the laptop and you will have a good clean install when you need it. Or you could image the C: drive with something Arconis True Image.

I mentioned above that my unit came with Seagate HDs. I personally do not trust anything from Seagate and was disappointed in ASUS for using them. I listed the model number above google it and see what you find.

I upgraded to an Western Digital SiliconEdge SSD primary HD and a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200 RPM secondary HD. The SSD really brought this thing to life and it supports TRIM for long-term performance.

Excellent Value, Solid Fast Laptop – Paul Patti – Jupiter, FL United States
ASUS is certainly a serious competitor in the laptop market especially if it continues to make machines that are as solid and feature rich as this one. I’ve owned and tried laptops at home and while travelling from all other manufacturers, and have been satisfied with 2 years of use before things started to go wrong. This ASUS is built for much tougher use, and was cutting-edge when I bought it, with the i7, Windows 7 and the USB 3.0, so I suspect it will last 4 – 5 years easily.

My only negative observation after 8 weeks of use is that the Blu-ray software causes conflicts with my anti-spyware program (PC Tools Spyware Doctor). To view a Blu-ray without freezes and skipping you have to disable this anti-spyware program. I tried working on a solution but have given up, content to either settle for DVD (which plays with no problems) or to disable the anti-spyware from PC Tools temporarily while I watch a Blu-ray.

I also bought the Western Digital My Book 3.0 – 1 TB USB 3.0 external drive, and its ease of use and speed on the ASUS USB 3.0 port is blazing. It seems as fast as any internal HD, transferring backups and large files in a blink. The speed of USB 3.0 is very impressive, and its inclusion on the ASUS laptop was a major reason I chose ASUS and this model laptop.

I am very, very happy with the quality and performance of this laptop, and recommend anyone investigate ASUS for their needs vs. the more commercially available competitors.

I have always loved ASUS motherboards and used them exclusively in the past when building systems.

When I was looking for a laptop and found this offering from Asus, it was a no-brainer both from a price perspective and my fondness for the Asus brand.

This laptop has exceeded my expectations.

It is loaded to the hilt and the build quality is phenomenal.

Asus also offers a free 2 year “anything goes” warranty, provided you return the registration card prompty. Also, make multiple copies of your receipt and registration card since they require the original receipt be submitted, then ask that you also mail them a copy.

It is on the large end of the spectrum, so keep that in mind if you intend to transport it frequently.

If, however, you are looking for a primarily home-based machine that incorporates the latest technology, is speedy, and works very well, this is it.

It is a whole lot of laptop – Peter Breadmore – Tokyo Japan
This thing is fully loaded. Really. I got it with an after market Intel 80GB SSD and swapped out one of the dual 340GB 7200 Seagates. Very responsive, high powered and the screen is great.

For the money, nothing comes close, plus that 2 year global warranty. There is a lot of bloatware pre-installed, but this seems to be very typical. I’m still tidying some of it up but I’m very happy already with where it is. I would buy this again with absolutely no regrets.

ASUS N61JQ-X1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) On Sale.

Had to push one of the back panels in so it was seated properly.
There is a tiny gap in the casing by the media reader slot – it is barely noticeable, and I assume it’s another part that is just not pushed in all the way like the back piece was.
There is a tiny amount of keyboard flex, but when you’re typing you don’t notice it – only if you’re looking for it/pressing down deliberately hard.
Coming from a mac laptop, the multi-finger gestures aren’t as bad as I’ve read – they seem to work just fine so far (after you know what the gestures are – they aren’t all extremely intuitive) After a few days of use I notice it works only sometimes – anyone know whats up with that? If you’re getting this laptop I wouldn’t count on this feature.
It feels surprisingly light.
The hinge is sturdy – i expect it to last.
The sound: I can see both opinions – it can sound tinny – but it’s also… guess what? A laptop. And no, there isn’t cell phones with better speakers – although i’ve seen some that are pretty close to this. There just isn’t any lows, and barely any mids – if you really want good sound, ignore the hype Asus created in their advertisement of these speakers (all that’s really exciting about it is that the normal laptop speakers are arranged in some special way-and it comes with some tuning software) and get a pair of some decent desktop speakers. Don’t expect any miracles with the sound. That being said, the built-ins are decent laptop speakers (the stereo effect will certainly surprise you). & They are plenty louder than my Macbook’s built-ins – so i’m not disappointed with it. The sound required some minor tweaking in the SRS software to get it to my liking.
The hand rest is a fingerprint magnet, I can tell it’s going to be difficult to keep clean – the fingerprints go on, but they don’t wipe off as easy as if it were a gloss plastic.
The back, indeed looks black. It’s pretty & understated.
There isn’t a terrible amount of bloat-ware.. I uninstalled all of the game trials and a few other programs and that was all i had to do.
It’s pretty thin for a laptop this size – not fat looking like those terrible HPs
Mine came with 1333 ram.
I created a backup DVD set when i got the laptop – and that took about 2 hours (compressing the files, creating an iso, and burning 4 discs) with the supplied backup software.
I haven’t run down the battery yet – but it says about 1.5 hours.
The video card is…awesome. I ran Battlefield Bad Company 2 (a DX11 game) on all of the highest settings (8x anti-aliasing, highest resolution etc.) And it ran perfectly except for a bit of slow down during massive explosions etc. – but, when the anti-aliasing is turned down to 4x it runs just fine.
I was planning on getting an X25M SSD for this laptop – but…It doesn’t really need it! Boots up in seconds… Photoshop opens in about 4-5 seconds…
I saw today that apple revamped their macbook & MBPs – and after looking at them – I would still buy this laptop. It’s ,800 cheaper… And the hardware is still better. Besides that, I am really impressed with windows 7 – After a few days I don’t miss anything from OSX.

Runs amazingly cool for a fast laptop, good keyboard action and a usable touch pad. Too much bloatware, but I expected that (and have already deleted most of it), and I hate that they no longer ship Windoze computers with a recovery CD, but that’s not ASUS. I got it the day after Lucid Lynx came out and have it dual booting into Windows and Ubuntu, with both systems running smooth as glass. The shiny case is a fingerprint magnet, but I never go anywhere without a cleaning cloth, so we’re good. I play WoW at nearly top settings with no noticeable lag even in Dalaran, and that’s before upgrading to 8 gigs RAM, which I’m going to do anyway on my next round of frivolous spending. With regular cleaning and maintenance, and keeping coffee away from it, I should get a good three to five years out of her. I’m a very happy girlgeek. Thanks.

Rubberized Palm Rest Peeling easily – F. P. Wibowo –
First month after I bought this from Amazon, I would have given ***** for this laptop.
After 1 month, I changed my mind completely.
Hardware-wise, I would give a 5 stars, but the build-quality is very inferior.
The palm rest is rubberized, and I’ve been a little wary about this even before I bought this laptop because I know this type of material is not durable at all, esp. with such a thin layer of rubber over plastic. AND I WAS RIGHT.
After 2 months, the rubberized palm rest starts to peel on the corner. In some areas, the rubberized surface began to create tiny air bubbles on the other corner. I’ve just put the laptop around several times into my backpack (with protective sleeve). Apparently mine is not the only case. There have been reports from many users who reports this peeling problem after only a while. Check out the N61JQ owner thread in [...], and you will see what I mean.
In my case, I can see the peeling starts to grow litle by little in only 1 month.
I can’t imagine what this laptop will look like within a year if the peeling keeps getting worse at this rate.
I can predict , this laptop will become the ugliest notebook I ever owned after 1 year of use, and I know that’s going to happen.
I’ve been using Dell & Lenovo laptop for 3-4 years, and the palm rest doesn’t show any wear, but this one has become ugly just within 2 months. Imagine that !
Beware of the rubberized palm rest area, that peeling will drive you crazy.

N61JQ-X1 = 2010 Most awesome laptop $ for $ – George –
ASUS N61JQ-X1 is the best laptop by far. I replaced all my gaming systems & desktop with = this laptop & a STEAM account. I wirelessly game on my 2009 52″ Sharp LCD HDTV & Sony/Polk -hybrid DolbyDigital 5.1 home theatre system [multi kW theatre]. Sometimes I game in the 7.2 Klipsch/Polk -hyrbrid movie theatre.

I know about games: I have a PS3 w/ 20+ Games HDMI & FiberOptical, Xbox360 HDMI w/ 500+ games & FiberOptical addon [gamertag CONTRA2634AD], i7-975EE desktop @ 4.8GHz on 24/7 Phase Change (TRI-SLI HDMI & SB Fatal1ty Titanium FiberOptical), and I auction vintage videogame lots of 100s of games.

N61JQ-X1 has Radeon 5730 1GB, a powerful DirectX 11 graphics card. This Radeon 5730 is at least 33-50% faster than the nVidia GT 220, 230, 240, 320, 350 you’ll find in similar under-00 LENOVO, DELL, HP competitors. Also, the 5730 is only about 20% slower than a GTS 360m, the modern over-00 laptop champ.

From continuous 24/7 use since my March 1, 2010 purchase, I have experienced no crashes, no bugs, no issues at all. I play all the modern STEAM games: AvP, CODMW2, Borderlands, DragonAge, Fallout3, RE5, GTA4, Crysis, Metro2033, STALKER, L4D2! Full speed. GT 360m laptop cannot even play minutes without overheat freeze/crash!

This is a flawless, lightweight computer that leaves nothing lacking for my use! I even upgraded my house to the fastest Wireless-N Buffalo Router on the market to PC game wirelessly from now on.

ASUS N61JV-X2 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) On Sale.

I’ve had my laptop for over 3 weeks and not experienced any problems. Guess my mine was manufactured on a good day compared to some others. It started fine, no problems burning the recovery dvds, no problems waking up after the lid is closed –just hit the power button. It wakes up exactly where I left off —internet, word document, etc. An earlier reviewer mentioned the screen brightness then dimming after a few minutes but you can easily adjust the settings to your preference.

The i5 processor is fast, the laptop runs quiet even when the fan comes on. The laptop does not heat up much. I use it on my lap while sitting on the couch and even after 2-3 hours, my lap is fine (not warm or uncomfortable). Guess I’m a couch potato! The multi-directional touchpad is pretty cool but really sensitive. It takes some getting used to but that’s because I’m a die hard mouse person. However, I do like the touchpad and may be converting. Sound is crisp and clear. Battery life depends on what you’re doing. I get about 3.5 hours when surfing the web. It’s around 2 hours if watching a dvd. There’s a lot of bloatware on it which I haven’t removed since I need to brush up on how to remove it.

Warranty: There is only one warranty card in the box, it’s for the Accidental Damage Warranty. The 1-year global warranty is automatic. Amazon was going to let me return it because it was missing info on the global warranty but I called Asus to see if I was supposed to get a separate card in the box. Asus said only the ADW card is in the box because the global warranty is automatic. Asus confirmed by running my serial number. Anyway, you can register your laptop online at Asus and register your ADW online too. But you still have to mail a copy of the invoice and ADW email confirmation to the address they tell you.

Comments on Asus: Asus’s website is challenging to navigate but eventually you find what you’re looking for. Their customer service was very helpful. I did not have any technical issues so I cannot speak about their tech help.

I hope this review is helpful. I did a lot of research on this site and others before buying this laptop and I’m very happy with my purchase. 9 for a quality 16-inch i5, 500 GB hard drive, NVIDIA graphics, and a warranty that includes free ADW too. The only improvement would be if the laptop could play blu-rays but no biggie.

Buying ASUS only from now on! – S. Boostani – Seattle, WA USA
I bought this laptop about a week ago and used over night shipping. So first things first, the product arrived in pristine condition which was a relief. Everything was included and well packaged. After putting it together and turning it on, the first message i got when i logged into windows was about creating a back up DVD of everything on the laptop including the windows. This was perfect since I have a habit of reinstalling windows every year and clearing my HD. So right off the bat it was reading my mind because I was going to do that anyway but now ASUS has created their own back up program that does it all. You just need 4 DVD’s to burn the data. I don’t use the laptop primarily as a gaming system but I do run SolidWorks and MATLAB and Rhinoceros on it as well as a couple of other programs that require high specs. And I am happy to say that it outperformed and not only runs each program without any glitches, it is perfectly capable of running them all at once.

The only thing that gave me a worry about two days ago was the wireless card. The front I/O switch wasn’t working and the hot key for enabling the card was also not working. This went on for a couple of days and when it started to get irritating I decided to actually try and fix it. After Disabling and Enabling the card from Device Manager, the card seems to be working again. There hasn’t been any other issues with the laptop and I’m happy to say that it is definitely a good choice for the price. Not to mention that it comes with a one year accidental damage warranty from ASUS, that you just need to register your laptop for.

I’ve owned several different brands of notebook computers, and this one by far is the best I’ve laid hands on. Bought it for a buddy, de-crapped the unit and installed some freebie apps. Highlights are SPEED, 3.0Mp webcam, 500gb 7200rpm hd, a USB 3.0 port (more than doubles xfer speed with pen drives), dual video, 4gb ram, wifi N (2.4ghz), multi-touch pad, and frankly, ASUS build quality, which is at least as good as Toshiba.

Cons: Nitpicks like the shiny cover (fingerprints) and it’s brown, a boring color. Be glad tho, because if they painted it red, it would cost another hundred bucks.

Bought this one for 9, but I see they’ve raised the price to 9. You might be able to wait it out, but it would be hard to get a computer this advanced and well-built for less, and it wouldn’t be an Asus. Good luck.

Computer comes with an accidental damage warranty which must be registered within 60 days. I mail the card to the address written on the registration card. It comes back undeliverable. Mail it again, undeliverable again. I call and they say “the address changed, but now you have to register it online to make sure we get it quickly”. They send me to a crappy website [...] which starts off by asking for my computer’s “Seral Number”. Fill out a bunch of online information, they give confirmation page which says I need to mail more documents to a different address. What a complete waste of time.

Other than that crap, I like the computer.

Great speed but buggy… – bradley a wright – Seattle
It’s a really fast and well designed computer, but within a week the bugs appeared. I’m left handed and Microsoft used to have left hand/right hand buttons. In their infinite stupidity they came up with a single button for switching mouse sides. After switching the finger pad would react with a menu every time you touched it. Called ASUS, who by the way does NOT give you their phone # in the packaging and the one on their website is on your dime. I got an 888 off the Microsoft website. For those of you needing help I wish you luck. I spent two hours with two different techs who kept putting me on hold (to read the manual). They had not clue one. I downloaded a driver and the tech didn’t recognize the text that appeared as the driver signature. It was a nightmare. Then after a few days the machine suddenly and inexplicably started “tink”ing after every mouse click. Nothing had been changed, no programs downloaded. I managed to turn off a few sounds in Sounds and got the problem mostly under control.
I think it best not to buy this computer. It may just be a lemon, but I went through hell with an HP (NEVER BUY ONE) and vowed to get something truly efficient and reliable this time. This computer is not it. I’m looking hard at Acer as it has a good reputation for toughness and long life. Sony too, but they’re a bit pricey for what you get.

Asus K42jr-a1 Review

Quick Synopsis: After putting a little time into it, its a quick, peppy system that can play movies and handle most games. As long as you aren’t an extreme gamer, this system will work for you.

The Asus K42jr-a1 runs very smooth and can handle everything I have thrown at it. I used the recovery partition to reinstall on a single partition, but I have heard of just doing a fresh install. This also works. As with many laptops these days, lots of bloatware, but I was aware of this, and cleaned out what I didn’t want. If you are a little weary fully deleting programs (even though you have the utility disk), just deactivate the services and stop certain programs from starting at the boot. This will also increase your performance.

****NOTE: When the computer was first booted, it seemed very sluggish. At times, the cpu light was on, but it appeared nothing was happening. Task Manager showed no CPU activity. After a couple minutes, the computer would resume what it was working on. But, this freezing, or sluggish activity would occur every 5 minutes or so. After some research, I found this obscure, but simple solution. From (…)

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStor and rename Parameters to Parameters.old.
Then restart the computer – this will stop the freezing, will speed up boot, and generally make it run better..
Note: This only works on computers which have a corrupt Intel AHCI install – modifying this key on computers which don’t have a corrupt Intel AHCI install will have no affect.
Once I applied this, the machine responded and is blazing now. So, if you are having odd performance issues, try this fix.”

The keyboard has perhaps a little more flex than most, but this does not bother me. Typing seems comfortable and isn’t causing any issues as I type this review. Keyboard doesn’t get hot after movie, gaming, or general use. The main heat exhaust is lcoated on the left side of the laptop. Is it a little warm, yes. But, that will happen. The fans create minimal sound. Maybe you will notice if you are working in a library by yourself. Any general background noise and the fans are not noticeable.

Dual monitor set up, either through VGA, or the HDMI, worked great. Watched Star Trek at 1080p through the laptop connected to the TV. (Not the Blu-Ray version) Can play computer games on my 19 inch while surfing the web on the laptop screen. A nice set-up.

Built-in Webcam tells me its a 1.3MP in the Device Manager, advertised as a 0.3MP. Microphone didn’t seem to be too effective, I used something else, and had no problem.

For battery life, I had OpenOffice open and I was browsing the net via wireless. After 75 minutes, the battery was down to 50%. The screen was at 25% brightness. So, I would estimate about 2.5 hours battery life, but one may be able to stretch that to 3 hours.

Yes, it does have only one audio out, this may be a problem for some, but for me it hasn’t. Itunes categorized and organized 1800 songs in about 3 minutes. And, the 14 inch is nice for me, as I travel a lot, and even going from the 15 inch to the 14 inch helps with the travel. It weighs under 5 pounds, and that can start to become noticeable if stuck in a airport for 3+ hours.

Finally, for you numbers people, some benchmarks:

While the HD5470, i5 Core, and 4 GB DDR3 RAM have some limitations, I was very happy with these results. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what this little guy can do.

In conclusion, after a little work, and a quick fix, this laptop delivers. For the needs of moderate gaming, web, processing, and entertainment (Movies, or music), this laptop does the job. For the price of ~(…), the I think the performance of the machine is a great deal.

Pros:
-very light and portable
-very quiet (fans automatically adjust depending on system temp)
-good set of speakers in it (they get pretty loud and still maintain clear sound
-multi-touch track pad works well
-facial recognition works well
-HDMI out is amazing, I use it to connect to my tv
-the screen is very clear and there are shortcut keys on the keyboard to adjust the brightness
-laptop is fast with the Intel i5, 4gb of RAM, and the HD 5470
-battery life is around 3.5 hours which is pretty good considering the hardware you are running off a 6-cell battery
-keyboard has plenty of shortcut keys (volume, brightness, media controls, wifi toggle, HMDI toggle, camera, battery mode)
-comes with a 2 year warranty and a 1 year accidental warranty

Cons:
-microphone isn’t very good
-keyboard has a little too much flex (it takes time to get used to, doesn’t really seem to bother me that much anymore)
-disk drive is tray style, slot style would be much better
-only one audio port which means you need an external sound card in order to use 5.1 surround sound speakers

Overall its a very good laptop with a few minor flaws. For the price you cannot beat it, I tried building a similar laptop with Dell and Lenovo and both came out to around 00. This laptop is great if you need a portable laptop that is also large enough to be used as a desktop replacement. It has a lot of great features packed into it and I would definitely recommend this laptop.

First, a 0 laptop that has only one audio jack! That is non-sense. You need to choose between MIC (then use the low power speakers) or Headphone (then use omni-directional embedded MIC “which captures everything around you”). I contacted customer support and the guy told me I could but those headset (mic+headphone) that has only one plug (like the iPhone ones). Guess what!? It doesn’t work. Now my only option is a U$B headset.

Second, my keyboard feels very cheap. Not only feels, but some keys even get stuck sometimes. Also, when I press any key on the right side of it, all the keys around it go a little down, and the left side of the keyboard goes up. I saw the other guys review, and they liked the keyboard. So maybe that is something wrong with mine. On the other hand, I liked the mouse button.

The rest is fine, besides not having a eSata and bluetooth (but that I knew befor buying). I don’t like the memory card reader as well, but I should have noticed that it took only SD (memory sticks would be fine as weel).

I searched around for a long time trying to find a good balanced notebook/laptop. I chose this ASUS because of its look and features–it is a gift for my wife. I wanted to give her something that would be up-to-date and provide her with rich features and elegant look…this K52F-A1 provides that! Though I am the one that set it up after receiving it–I let her unpackage it and do all the basic setup–by updating the Windows 7 Update, she loves this laptop. I could tell by the look in her face she was very pleased with the gift. It has good clean crisp look, the screen has amazing clarity. The keyboard is smooth, easy to use, with all the keys easy to touch. Each key has the appropriate amount of space between each key. My wife commented that it was very light weight, not the heavy laptop that it looks to be. She loved that it is light. After taking the laptop into my hands, I could see why she stated that…it is very light, though it looks heavier because of the sturdy construction. Very sturdy and strong. I like the matted look & feel of the palm rest and the touchpad. This is a great product with rich features (Core i3, 4Gb DDR3, 320Gb HD, etc.) for the price! It doesn’t have everything I want in a laptop, but for anyone needing top-of-the-line with a budget, it is an excellent choice. Which is why I give it 5-stars. ASUS N71JQ-X1 17.3-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown) On Sale.

I purchased this laptop after unknowingly buying a stolen Dell Latitude 830 from Craig’s List. Thanks to Dell’s Lojack service, the police came to my house with a search warrant and confiscated the Latitude after I would not return the detective’s phone calls. (I wonder why they didn’t find the Latitude from the guy who sold it to me??) Anyway, if you own a Dell, the Lojack service does work. After this experience, do you think I would buy another Dell? -NOT ON YOUR LIFE. The police treated me like a common criminal, indicated that they thought I stole the laptop, and trashed my house. The 5 police officers who raided my home were not interested in helping me recover the $$$ I paid for the 830.

At any rate, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and buy new, unstolen, and get a warranty. After researching Tom’s Hardware, Newegg, Amazon, Laptop review and others I settled on Asus with the i7 processor. I intended to buy the N61 and save 0, but finally decided the 17″ screen was worth the extra money. The Egg people still had the N71 when I ordered, but are now sold out of this machine. However, Amazon had free super saver shipping so they got the call.

CONS: Don’t like the side plugin for the power cord; the fan exhaust gets quite warm. Both exhaust and power cord would be better if configured from the rear IMHO. Bloatware is easy to remove, but performance is simply amazing, and the best buy out there for this level of hardware BAR NONE.

FINALLY: I would not recommend anyone buying a used laptop unless it would be from a member of your own family. It is not a crime to buy a used laptop, but if it happens to be a stolen laptop, you will be treated like a criminal and you WILL NOT be able to recover your investment. I suppose you could take the seller to small claims, but that is a lot of trouble and aggravation, plus who is going to enforce the judgement if you do win?? I will add that I thought Dell should have given me a discount on a new laptop after fingering me for having a stolen machine. FAT CHANCE.

The reviews prior to this one say what a great laptop this is but that it lacked a Blu-Ray player. The description must have been off when most people first ordered this, and I would be upset if I had thought I was getting blu-ray player, but didn’t. That being said, and I knew what I was getting. Let me be clear; this is an AMAZING value for what you’re getting…even without Blu-Ray. Think about it; you’re getting an Intel Core i7 laptop, with a 1GB ATI discrete graphics card, 17 inch, high def screen, and a 500GB hard-drive…oh and 4GB of Kingston RAM…all for under 00 (as of this writing)? Are you kidding me?

I love this laptop, and I was a lifelong HP guy, until my screen died after 2 years of use…the build quality on this is incredible, the screen is beautiful, and as for Blu-Ray…meh. Everything’s going disc-less digital anyway. A few years from now, and everything will be download only anyway.

Don’t let the other reviews fool you, this is THE value in laptops, from one of the most well-decorated manufacturers of the last few years. Check out some sites on the net, do your research, and I’m sure you’ll come to the same conclusion I did…this is the laptop to own.

ADDITIONAL INFO (Posted 3/22/2010) after using this laptop for the past few days, I can safely say that this was a great bargain. It’s faster and more responsive than my previous HP that cost 3x as much. Also, it came with DDR3 1333 RAM instead of the advertised 1066. Nice little bonus. Point being, if you buy this laptop, I doubt you’d ever regret it.

This is a bit long, but please read so that you know what to expect when you get the N71. I wish I had read something like this before buying.

I researched computers for weeks and weeks. I decided on an Asus because they didn’t seem to have any bad rumors floating around. They are new, their other product lines boast great reviews and high quality products. For example, I hear some brands have screens go out early, other brands have software problems, others are rumored to just be crap. Asus, however, didn’t seem to have any bad words being spread. So I decided on them and landed on the N71. This is not a cheap computer, and for spending this much I would have expected close to perfection.

So I ordered one, and the first thing I noticed was that the disk drive rattled dramatically. While installing software, the entire computer would shake and make a loud buzzing sound. This and a boot up error (not quite the blue screen of death, but similarly terrifying) when coming out of hibernation made me return it for a replacement. Amazon was great, they replaced it overnight and compensated for return shipping.

So I’m now on my second N71.

First thing…the quad core is not blowing me out of the water like I’d expect. It seems like it’s just a fast processor, not the remarkably stupendous speed that I’d expect from the current top of the line.

Second, I realized that the express gate feature isn’t as cool as I thought it would be. It’s an early 90s looking browser with little to no functionality.

Third, this amazing multi-touch touch pad is disappointing. I really had high expectations for it, how cool would it be to swipe three fingers to the right and switch applications, to swipe three fingers up and bring up My Computer, to scroll using two fingers (like on a Mac), etc, etc, etc. I was really excited about all these convenient features. The truth is that it’s about as responsive as a crappy touch screen cell phone (you’ll know exactly what I mean if you’ve played around with one of the first phones that came out to compete with the iPhone). Most of the time the multi-touch operation fails, you do the motion and nothing happens. The two finger scrolling is great (about the only feature that works well) but when you pause the screen jumps up and down very quickly, like it’s stuck between one tick up and one tick down on the vertical scrolling.

Lastly…the multimedia hard buttons are actually broken!! There is a “expressGate” button, Mute, Vol Down, Vol Up and Play/Pause button at the top of the keyboard. The Mute and Volume Up do not work, and the others I don’t use. So of the three buttons I’d use most (Vol Up, Vol Down and Mute)…only one of them works. This is really annoying and I don’t want to have to mess with returning it again since I’ve already got this computer all set up. I am going to call Asus to see if there is something I can do to fix it, but it looks to be a hardware problem which means I’m probably screwed (since I don’t want to have to mail the computer all over the country for a couple broken buttons).

So, sorry for the long review. All in all, I am completely UNDERWHELMED by this “priced close to top of the line” computer. But, it still does all the normal stuff you need a computer to do. It just comes standard with some constantly annoying things that make me regret the purchase, just not enough to return it and start my search over.

The Laptop is a very good computer, very good resources, the screen size it’ correct but the computer is actually smaller than the specs given, and is not as heavy as it looks. It dosen’t have a Blu-Ray combo though.
