ASUS UL50AG-A2 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop – 12 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) On Sale.

We recently purchased this reconditioned laptop with Win 7 Home Premium. We wanted to take a computer with us for a trip to Washington D.C. and were originally looking at netbooks. Unless a small size is your top reason for purchasing a laptop, skip the netbooks. By the time you add on the extra RAM to equal what this unit comes with by default, an external optical drive so you can install third party software, and a full version of Windows 7 instead of the “light” version almost all netbooks come with, you’re paying at least as much for your “cheap” netbook as this unit.

Battery life is excellent. Is it the fastest thing in the world? No, but we expected that. Neither though is it slow. The price perfectly fits the performance. It will easily do what we intend to use it for without feeling sluggish.

In what seems to be the norm with all Windows computers, the Asus comes loaded with tons of worthless software. Besides the plethora of junk software to get rid of, a large portion of a 320 GB drive was being consumed by a backup of the system software on a hidden partition. Hardly necessary since the computer came with restore disks. I knew I would never use those things though since that would just put everything back on the hard drive I wanted to remove, and has no option to do anything but destroy every bit of data currently on the drive. What if you need to save important data first from a system that won’t boot?

Quite seriously, I find it hard to believe consumers haven’t filed a lawsuit against PC manufacturers who don’t give you a real copy of Windows, which you paid for, on a disk. At least Asus does give you restore disks with this unit. Some manufactures only put a copy of the system software on the hard drive. And just how is that a backup, or even useful? A real disk, similar to a retail copy, would allow you to repair the drive so you could backup important data first before doing a restore or other rebuild of the hard drive.

What I did was take the retail copy of Win 7 Home Premium I bought to install on my Mac Pro and wiped the laptop drive with it completely, repartitioning it into a C and D drive. After installing Win 7 from the retail disk (still completely legal since the laptop came with the same version of Win 7 and has its own product key to activate it), I then used the driver disk that came with the laptop to get the hardware working the way it should. End result was a laptop that boots and works much faster and better than it did with the factory setup. I then use Norton Ghost to make complete backups of the drive on a regular basis to the D drive partition. Those backup files then get copied to an external hard drive. Way easier to do a restore of the laptop to its last backed up state in case of a virus or something than starting over from scratch.

Asus 50 – Lam Jock –
I’ve own couple of other laptops and this one seems to work very well. After being a developer for years, you can see how a machine works after running programs on it. This machines performs very well and I’d definitely recommend it.

ASUS – A SUESS? SURE!! – LOUISE B. NESTIN’ –
THIS LAPTOP IS GIANT. ITS REALLY BIG AND REALLY CRAZY!! ITS PRETTY MUCH THE OPPOSITE OF A NETBOOK I WOULD SAY. I LIKE IT BECAUSE IT HAS A FULL SIZE NUMERICAL KEYBOARD THAT I NEVER USE, BUT I REALLY LIKE TO LOOK AT IT AND KNOW I HAVE THAT CAPABILITY IF I WANT. I DO HAVE TO COMPLAIN THOUGH, AFTER ABOUT A WEEK OF HAVING THIS I GOT A VIRUS FROM DOWNLOADING A PROGRAM TO MAKE ME INTO AN AVATAR CHARACTER. NOT SURE IF ITS ASUS’S FAULT BUT THEIR COLORS SEEM LIKE NA’VI SO I BET IT PROBABLY IS!!

JUST A WARNING !

Satisfied – Boys And Only Boys –
To be honest, I know very little about computers. This brand was recommended by some of my “computer geek” friends. So far I have been satisfied with this laptop and would recommended it to others. This is only the second computer that I have ever owned and is the first lap top computer that I have ever owned or used.

The key board does have a little flex in it, but it is nothing that has bothered me or effected the performance.

The battery life is not quite 12 hours. It might reach its full potential if I where to set all the settings to the proper setting for max battery life. I generally use it for checking email and word documents. With the settings that I have it at, I can get about 6-7 hours before needing to plug in. It has been used more less as a desk top computer. I have not used it outside of my house yet.

The over all appearance is sleek and slender. I like the look of this computer, but I also love the color black. (Very clean and professional looking in my opinion.) The down side is that it does collect and hold lots of finger prints, both on the outer shell and the inner face around the keyboard.

The touch pad mouse is nice and user friendly for the most part. If or when your fingers get sweaty you will have difficulties using the touch pad. It can be a little sensitive at times, especially when clicking. I have found it best to start a command off of the pad and then slide my finger onto the pad. This helps prevent unwanted commands. This was only an issue for a couple of days since I have been using a mouse for almost all navigation since.

It is a little bigger than I would have liked it to be, but that is my fault. I wanted the number pad on the right side of the key board. I would have probably been better of with the UL30 or UL80 for this reason. I am going to use this laptop for as a stationary business computer and look into an Asus net-book for on the road applications.

Once again, this review is coming from some one that knows very little about computers. Take my comments for what they are worth. I would recommend this product or brand to anyone. I have been very happy with it thus far.

ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop (12 Hours of Battery Life)

Monday, May 24th, 2010

ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop (12 Hours of Battery Life) On Sale.

I used it a few months now. I’m very happy with the battery life, compatibility with Ubuntu Linux 10, and speed especially after installing a solid state drive. (OCZ Vertex)

All and all a great buy.

Problem:
- Before you buy it, make sure you look up the widespread problem with the intermittent wireless connections. more later.
- It comes with bloadware and the backup cd creator software simply doesn’t burn correctly with my external burner, so i have no way to reinstall windows without paying.
- the clam shell does not open all the way up 180 degrees, which makes it quite inconvenient.
- The edge is rough with plastic seams.

Took me quite a lot of pain to read up on the wireless problems.

There’s a widespread problem with the wireless card dropping connections. I tested many settings and found that there’s no problem with Linux, no problem if connecting to 801.11 b/g network but big problem with Windows 7 wireless N network. I got the badly named driver from Asus website which made it stop dropping network connection, but the connection is much slower than the same laptop running Linux, especially upload speed.

i wish I knew of a way to drop the connection speed on the wireless driver to b/g only, which could possibly solve the problem.

I might just get a half sized wireless driver from Intel and install it.

Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews–a big time saver.

Snap
Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again–and your windows are back.

Not bad for the price – Dustin Vaselaar – Charlottesville, VA United States
Overall, the laptop is not bad for the price. The 12-hours of battery life advertised on Amazon is misleading, the actually maximum battery life is 10-hours under extremely optimistic conditions. My biggest complaint with this laptop is the noisy hard drive which in addition to being an auditory distraction has a tendency to get stuck in a noisy chattering mode which locks-up the operating system if the laptop experiences sudden movements during hard drive activity.

Except for an inverted webcam image in Skype, the laptop works fine with the latest 10.4 version of Ubuntu.

I didn’t realize this at the time purchase, but this X5 version of the UL30A does not come with bluetooth.

Asus Laptop – L. Eric Henrich – Arizona
The 1st one was bad out of the box with a clunking hard drive, send it back to Amazon and they replaced it with overnight ship. got the second one and all was good except the camera was viewing upside down. found that the wrong driver was installed. installed the correct driver on the CD and now everything works great. I really like the laptop.

An awesome notebook! – N. Canada – Suburban Washington DC
I purchased this notebook as a 2nd household computer. My goal was to have a computer that was small and light enough to actually travel with, that had a significant battery life on a single charge, yet was large enough to use. So far, this has been perfect. I purchased as well the external cd/dvd drive since the ASUS UL30A-X5 doesn’t have one. Both are incredibly light weight, yet pack incredible power and speed. Very highly recommended.

Asus – You’re on your own – Bover3 – Tampa, FL
The main reason why I’m giving this laptop one star has to do with Asus’s customer/technical support. It’s non-existent. I had several problems with my laptop and called for support. The first level of technical support cannot even answer rudimentary questions, the ones that anyone who’s heard of Google could handle. Over two months ago, I placed several calls (escalating two of them) and was told that 1. a supervisor would call, and 2. a tech specialist would call. Despite their assurances I NEVER RECEIVED A CALL BACK. If you buy any Asus product you can forget about their two year warranty. I am now experiencing other problems with this laptop but have not bothered to call in; I am researching them on my own. If you buy any Asus product go into it with eyes wide open – the only support you’ll get is what you find out yourself.

ASUS makes a good job – J. Cardenas Rodriguez – Texas
Since I bought this laptop, I decide for the brand name. I use it for a designer work. This machine came with Vista OS and the promise to obtain W7 free with registration. I receive 3 days later a dvd to upgrade the OS. Excellent until this point. 2 days more to upgrade the laptop won’t start. I make a call to the Assistant service. They gave me a RMA number. 10 days later I receive the same machine with a technical report “corrupt OS. Reinstall Windows Vista”. Until today the computer works excellent. I am afraid to put the upgrade to W7 because I think it was the reason of the previous crash.
The laptop is beautiful, thin and light. I bought this in a third party store. BUY.COM.(I recommend you read well the warranty policy in this site.) They send me the equipment well packed, signature confirmation FED.EX third day, at house front door. Really an awesome service. Thank’s to all(AMAZON.COM; BUY.COM and the technician service of ASUS). God Bess America.

Nice computer but have had some problems – Jaytee – CA, USA
After receiving ASUS UL50AG-A1 I booted it up which proved to be quite easy. The keyboard took a little getting
used to since the keys are very close together and appear to be too far to the left. The computer would often shut down in the middle of a task to install updates which was very frustrating. Another problem I encountered: I was preparing a Power Point presentation and when I tried to made corrections to the text, it would insert a Chinese translation for my text even though I did not request that. All my efforts to remove the Chinese translation proved futile so I ended up re-doing the presentation with the corrections. I have not tested the battery life to see if it lives up to the 11 hour limit but it seems to last a long time while unplugged and I have had no problems with the battery.

I am still undecided whether I will keep it – I need to see if I can get some of the kinks out of it.

ASUS UL50Vt-A1 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop – 11.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

ASUS UL50Vt-A1 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop – 11.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) On Sale.

I was considering a Macbook or a Dell when I was researching my first serious laptop. I say “serious” because the two I’ve had in the past were old hand-me-downs that were always locking up, with like 40 gig of hard drive and one gig of ram.

But my wife has two nice laptops and I would watch her effortlessly go to chatrooms and check email while watching the TV in the den. I was jealous, I admit it.

My main uses for a computer:
Audiophile- I love my itunes with lossless soundfiles; 290 gig worth of music
Writer- I write novels and short stories and submit them, and Word is my program of choice
Movies/entertainment- I like the diversion of watching a movie and TV shows, occasional games

I sold some things on ebay to build up enough reserve to get a Macbook. I wanted a mac at first because of the immunity to viruses, and the so-called intuitiveness. Mind you, to learn this intuitiveness I had to spend a hundred bucks to go to classes to relearn the computer. This sounded actually worth it to me, until I considered…Who uses a mac? Not my wife. Nobody at work. So who am I interfacing with…my ego? The publications for writing submissions usually request Word. And the mac cost a few hundred dollars more than the cream of the crop at other companies. Hmmm. I researched PCs.

I got this one first because of the ratings: Nearly everyone likes this computer because it seems reliable and fast. Second, I got it because the hard drive was big enough to hold my itunes along with my writings. Third, it has enough RAM and processing to fly a TV show or movie without stuttering and making me scream with aggravation. Fourth, I could take it on the road all day without a power cord because the average battery life was 5-10 hours (realistically, with my music fetish and surfing the net). Fifth, it was supposed to open quickly to Windows 7 and handle workloads with minimal crashing.

After a month with the laptop, I have to say all of these things are true. The only drawback for me was the soundcard; it sucks. But so do 90 percent of the soundcards that come with a laptop. For the audiophiles out there…There isn’t a card slot on this to fit one of those Sound Blaster Audigy cards. It has plenty of USBs, so you can try one of those x-fi thumb drive thingies…I did…but they make click noises on this Asus and most other laptops, just like you read about on the complaints page. On my Asus it was like rice crispies fluttering under a very clinical sound. I pulled that thing out of the USB slot so fast I burned my fingers. So the x-fi GO thumb drive sounded great…to poop on. I ended up with the Ibasso D2+ Boa. Look it up; it is awesome for the money. It is an external headphone amp/sound chip that you plug into the usb. If you like rich, tubey sounds, you will dig it…Just don’t forget to plug into a usb and let it play music on its own thru headphones for a few days to “burn it in.” Because it does sound bad at first, but don’t let it fool you. Give it time. Plus, it doesn’t pull on processor power like the x-fi thumb software does. The Ibasso makes my laptop sound as good as an ipod with a headphone amp. Nice. And my whole music collection is in one place. Nice nice.

To my delight, the laptop plays TV shows with ease and movies, too. And with a push of a button, I can send the screen into power saving mode. Yes, the pretty screen saver goes away and the screen is just white-with-icons in saving mode, but who cares? The main thing is saving power. This is what I do: Take the Asus to work without worrying about the power cord, turn it on in power saving mode, use it all day for music or whatever as time allows, then take it home and plug it in. Usually, I can work on it while watching TV until I go to bed, THEN plug it in. No kidding.

Annoyances: Minor, but true. First, the surface after opening up the laptop is slick and black, so it really does show a lot of goop. Gotta wash your hands before and after every use just to feel clean again. The onboard virus protection software option is annoying. I signed up to it and wish I’d gone with AVG or something. It is so paranoid (and I can’t seem relegate it) that it won’t let me download updates sometimes…I have to turn off the protection. Dude. Because it thinks everything’s code red all the time. Also, Windows 7 comes with this. Not Word or anything else. Forget about the trial version. IT WON’T HAPPEN. First, it will prompt you to enter a secret code to start your free trial of the Windows Suite. The code doesn’t exist. The Asus does not come with a suite code number. So Windows will send you on a wild goose chase online. DON’T CHASE THE GOOSE. Trust me. With no code, you may as well be a hacker going after the red alert on the paranoid virus program. What you do is, either find an old version of Word, etc, and load it, or pay the hundred bucks and buy the home suite outright online…THEN it will give you your frickin’ buyer code. Finally, if you are setting this on your lap (why would you do that?), be sure not to balance it on your knees or anything unstable. I had my legs crossed, balancing the laptop on my lower leg, and the thing is so thin that the picture started fluttering back and forth. I was probably jostling the battery or something. As long as the thing is sitting on a flat surface (even flat on my thighs instead of my knees) it acts fine. OH…I had to get a larger briefcase because most bags are made to hold 14″ laptops. No biggie. There is a pretty good selection of 15-16″ width friendly bags out there. I found one I liked at Fry’s, out of ten or twelve options.

Despite these few things, I am very happy with my purchase. And, if something happens, I can utilize the extensive warranty. How to sum up the ASUS UL50VT? One phrase seems right: Peace of mind.

Overall Excellent – Few Drawbacks – Scott Morrow –
Have had it for 2 months. Pros: light, great battery life, keeps cool, good feature set. Cons: trackpad is a challenge, keyboard flexes, and had an issue w/ battery pack and Asus took a month to send a new one and after a lot of effort. Overall, highly recommend. To clear one thing up that I see in other reviews – the model at Best Buy is different, namely the track pad and the warranty. You may pay less but you are not getting the 2 year warranty – I checked with Asus and elected to buy it from Amazon instead.

Screen sucks – Homer1952 – SE Michigan
I should have listened to those who complained about the screen & the fact it has a very narrow sweet spot for viewing.

ASUS really dropped the ball on this & I ended up paying for it. It is surprising to me that it got into production this way. Somebody in the company should have said: Stop! and fix it.

Superb performance for the money; great mix of features – 35-year Technology Consumer – Maryland, USA
This computer replaced a six-year old Toshiba Satellite laptop that served flawlessly, but is clearly in its final, noisy days.

While it’s far too soon to know if this Asus product can match that length of service, their motherboards enjoy a good reputation among the build-it-yourself crowd and their netbooks have been well received. After exercising this computer for a short time, I’m very impressed.

This laptop is very strong in four areas that helped me narrow my selection from a dizzying array of laptop choices in its price range:
(1) display size and quality (15.6 inches, crisp and bright, separate video processor with 512 MB of its own memory)
(2) system memory (4 GB DDR3)
(3) battery life (Asus advertises 12 hours; more on how they get to this below); even without the tweaks that get you to the high end, it offers great battery performance.
(4) length and scope of warranty coverage.

About the battery life which other reviewers have criticized as not meeting the marketing hyperbole (Amazon indicated 11+ hours and a sticker in the packaging claims 12+ hours)….
Asus has a power control scheme offering the option to select from two video adapters: a discrete NVIDIA Gforce G210M video processor or the integrated Intel display adapter. Users then have to decide whether they want enhanced video or extended battery life. A small power button above the keyboard lets you make this selection. You can also select an auto mode, which makes the choice for you based on whether using AC power or the battery is being used.

Asus also includes a power management utility offering four power setting scenarios (high performance, entertainment, quiet office or battery saving). Each of these can be further customized (display blanking, screen savers, sleep mode, etc.) as you determine your balance of performance vs. battery life.

So: can you really get 11 or 12 hours of battery time? Maybe.
IF you select the battery saving mode, and IF you accept the diminished video performance, and IF you give up power-hungry goodies (like with Windows sidebar) and if you avoid power-intensive tasks (like CD burning or video rendering)…you might get there. I always figure the marketing figures are make some best-case assumptions…

What I have done it used this machine for six untethered hours while enjoying the enhanced video and writing to multiple DVDs. As an upgrade to an old machine that could barely get to 90 minutes away from an AC outlet: six hours battery time for full-featured operation is excellent.

Their support seems better than many other manufacturers. I registered with the Asus support site, and posted a question about operating the webcam. Within five hours, I had an email response. Very impressive. Although I haven’t tried it –or had a need to– they also have a 24/7 toll free number.

Asus offers the following mix of warranties on this computer in the US and Canada:
-30 days for “bright dot” (hot pixels…they don’t say anything about about dead ones!) on the display. ANY singe pixel qualifies for this.
-1 year on the the battery
-2 years on the computer
-1 year accidental damage coverage (which they immediately extend to 2 years when you register online)
-two way shipping for any repair/RMA situations.

For the money, this is a superb laptop choice and Asus appears ready to stand behind it.

Why not five stars?
Small issues with the overall package.
Each is minor, a and couple are a matter of personal preference rather than an actual flaw. However, they probably reflect how Asus achieved this combination of price point and computer performance. While they don’t detract from the overall value of this machine, they collectively stand between four and five stars. If there were a 4.5 star option, this computer would be there.
Gripes:
(1) No recovery media is included. An automated utility prompts you to run it at setup (or you can do so anytime you’d like to afterward). You will need four DVDs to do this; if you use DVD-RW media, this will take well over an hour). Just like with user manuals in soft copy: this is something that should not be pushed to the consumer, and should have been in the box. Even though the utility interface indicates success (or not), I’m left with less confidence in my self-made recovery media than I would have with media that shipped from the factory.
(2) No speaker volume control wheel. Volume is controlled either with via the task bar (using a mouse or touchpad) or FN keys.
(3) No physical switch to turn the wireless adapter on/off. This is done either through a FN key or a task bar icon (and you may not remember the latter, because it can be hidden under Windows 7 options!).
(4) The webcam software was not easy to identify. This was mostly because of a silly, cartoonish user interface that also makes it hard to use. They could have done better by talking to at least one user.
(5) Others have written about the super glossy wrist-rest area. It’s an an absolute fingerprint magnet and skin oil pallate. A matte or brushed finish, similar to this machine’s outside cover could have eliminated this. I’m considering fine-grain sandpaper to roughen this area up!
(6) I prefer a power adapter that plugs in at the rear of a laptop. This one plugs in on the left side, which can be in issue depending on the AC outlet location.
(7) One of the three USB ports is at the front right of the machine. If you use this for a mouse (as many right-handers might), you’ll have mouse cordage right where you might prefer to place the actual mouse.

None of those are serious enough to diminish a “buy with confidence” bottom line for this computer. It’s light, powerful, power-stingy and full-featured.

ASUS UL30A-X3 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop – Over 11 Hours of Battery Life

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

ASUS UL30A-X3 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop – Over 11 Hours of Battery Life On Sale.

I’ve had this laptop for about a week now and overall I’m very satisfied. I was considering this one, the ACER 3810 and the ASUS UL30A-A1. For about 0 less than the ACER and 0 less than the ASUS UL30A-A1, you get the same level of CPU performance and sacrifice on the drive size and Bluetooth (if you do your homework, you’ll see that on the ASUS website, the X3 model does not have Bluetooth whilet the A1 one does). I bought a Cirago USB adapter off of Amazon for about for the bluetooth functionality. I also bought the Samsung external USB optical drive, Microsoft Bluetooth mouse and a Case Logic Neoprene sleeve (13 inch in black). All work very well togther and the sleeve fits perfectly.

Relative to the keyboard, it’s fine – not the best and not the worst. The trackpad issues was noted on some on-line magazine reviews and altogether it shouldn’t be an issue after usng it for a while. As for other reviews identifying a “con” for a lack of an optical drive, my comment is – if you were buying this laptop for it’s price, wright and thickness, isn’t the lack of an optical drive a “Pro”?

Relative to the battery performance, if you leave it in high performance, the battery life will be abount half the advertised life which is still fantastic (as I type, the battery is 66% charged with 4 hours, 58 minutes remaining). Again, I rely on on-line magazine’s review of a product and many view the battey life as extremely good testing at over 8 hours and certainly better than the ACER.

I am dissappointed with Amazon over the missing case and mouse but I am overlooking that in my rating of the product. Also, I did use 2 day shipping with Amazon Prime and the computer was delivered the next day.

MacBook Killer – Joseph M. Lisiecki – orlando, florida usa
If you don’t get the Asus get something with the Ultra low Voltage Intel processor like the UL series has. It has the power of a full laptop and the portability and battery life of a net book. NOT A NET BOOK. Since it isn’t published any where else the battery it ships with is a low profile battery and doesn’t add to the thickness at all.

I love this laptop, it has a lot of new software developed by Asus that I find helpful, along with a 8 sec internet, picture, pdf, music portal quick start up (more like 15 sec). Battery life CAN BE 10+ HRS espaesially if you use the quick start feature a lot because you can avoid hibernating and resuming a lot.

The mouse pad however I don’t love because it seems to be a little too glossy for you finger to glide on it and not as responsive as I would like. The mouse pad has a cool software feature by Asus. They made an easy to use scroll, pop-up menu, zoom, open programs (or what-ever you want to set it as) built in to the mouse pad. I think that is why the sensitivity is kind of low.

I gave it five stars because I feel like for the price it cant be beat. ~200 dollars less than a student offer Mac-book, ~400 less than a reg Mac-book, and less than half the price of a Mac-book pro. Also i think it’s better than any other quality windows laptop (dell, hp are all i can speak for) Ive seen in price range.

The laptop is fine but imposible to get in touch with the ASUS – J. Lee – New York ,NY USA
The laptop is fine it runs cooler then my HP and battery life is not quite 11 hours but long enough for my use. My complaint is I’ve mailed the warrenty card as directed and had it returned, the address that was printed on the warrenty card is not correct and there is no phone number in the US you can reach. My upgrade to window 7 required me to mail, fax or e-mail to a chinese address.I have faxed then e-mail with no response from ASUS.

Great Long Life Light Laptop – T. W. Morden – Milwaukee, WI
Great laptop so far. Excellent battery life. This was a migration from the ASUS 1000H, so small size was not an issue. In fact the screen and keyboard seem huge in comparison.

Three small complaints / notes about the system, however. One, the screen has a somewhat narrow view angle. (Not necessarily a problem, but very noticeable when sitting on a desk and you walk up to it.) Two, the facial recognition software works great sometimes and not so great at others. And three the battery / back side of the laptop feels a little soft/squeezable. (It doesn’t affect the machine at all, but is noticeable when you carry the closed unit and it feels like there is play in the back hinge area.)

Other than that, it is a great unit, with a very generous standard warranty that includes 1 year of accidental damage coverage. I would buy again.

ASUS UL80Vt-A1 14-Inch Thin and Light Black Laptop (11.5 Hours of Battery Life)

ASUS UL80Vt-A1 14-Inch Thin and Light Black Laptop (11.5 Hours of Battery Life) On Sale.

I received my silver asus ul80vt laptop today, and I absolutely love it! This is my first review, but I thought it was necessary because it was such a great deal! In the price range, (I bought it for around 0) this was top of the line. The battery life is incredible, it was delivered in excellent condition, and best of all it’s lightweight! The screen is, in my opinion, of great quality. The viewing angles are not nearly as bad as some of the reviews I read, and the color is awesome! Also, it’s the perfect size. It’s small, but big enough so that you don’t have to squint! It’s about the size of a hard back textbook, but much thinner. The processor is great, and the hard drive is adequate. Internet connection works great, and the camera is a lot better quality than I was expecting. I was expecting to have trouble with the trackpad, but so far it seems normal to me. The only thing I noticed is that I tend to move the mouse with the base of my hand while typing on occasion, but that’s nothing major. I have heard that asus makes the motherboards for mac computers, and while I considered splurging for a macbook pro, I couldn’t justify the cost difference. I could buy TWO of these for the price of a mac and it has more features!

    Very nice – K. Skinfill –
Works great, the size and weight is perfectly portable and the battery life is a great difference maker. The keyboard is nice to type on and the trackpad isn’t great but isn’t too bad.

Great purchase for the value – Daniel Solmirano –
Although the 11.5 hours of battery life are more like 7/8 hs, the overall experience is positive. I had a problem with the laptop, and apparently i’m not the only one: battery was dead on arrival. I tried replacing the item with amazon but it was out of stock! So I contacted one of Asus Authorized Service Providers and I got it replaced in 5 days.
The energy saving modes are complete but they mess up your desktop configuration (wallpaper, taskbar). After changing modes two or three times, I was unable to return to the original configuration. Will figure it out eventually.
As for productivity, I’m a developer and it suits nicely. It allowed me to finish some coding while on the plane, with the compiler, database engine and so on working at the same time; without major lags.
I still would have preferred to buy the 13″ version, but Amazon was out of stock of those too.

    ASUS UL80-A2 – Lu Duo –
The product looks good, but the touch pad is bad and camera’s pixel is too low. I like its key board.

Good product to start with but bad customer/repair service – Shelby –
The laptop worked great until the NIC stopped working. The tech support was helpful in issuing the RMA for repair and the repair time was decent (2-3 biz days). The shipping to the repair location was also free. However, after I received it back from the repair, I found the top casing was not put back properly and more problems occurred. So, I quickly requested a second RMA and it was issued within 24 hours. But, that was when the bad news started. It’s been on repair for more than 10 days now and the customer service still could not give me a straight-forward answer regarding what exactly went wrong and how much longer it would take to have the laptop repaired. It is a very frustrating experience to say the least. At the writing of this review, I still have not received the laptop back…

ASUS UL30Vt-X1 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop (11 Hours of Battery Life)

    Monday, April 12th, 2010

ASUS UL30Vt-X1 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop (11 Hours of Battery Life) On Sale.

If you want a portable notebook with the power of larger laptop and the battery power of a netbook, this is best price to performance ratio I have been able to find.
    Pros
13″ LED LCD display: granted the VIEWING ANGLES are limited, but with tweaking through nvidia’s control panel the monitor is very crisp.
Intel SU7300: Awesome compromise between power and performance, can be overclocked well for gaming and underclocked for better battery performance. Windows 7 is very snappy and mutli-tasking (at least watching movies while working a word doc and surfing the web) is smooth.
4gb or RAM: Works well enough and I don’t see the need for an expensive upgrade.
500gb drive at 5400RPM: Not the best, but certainly not the worst, I have heard that this drive excessively crackles but have not experienced it as of this writing. Wish it came with a 120 SSD but then the notebook would be as expensive as a macbook.
NVidia G210M Graphics: discrete graphics in a 13″ body….HAWT. Again, cheapest price to performance, only other discrete graphics in a notebook form of this size is the Alienware M11X otherwise you get the ATI Radeon 3200 or Intel integrated graphics. The Nvidia G210M will play HD without stuttering and most current games on reasonable settings.
Keyboard:n Full island style keyboard is nice, some flex but overall very nice to work on coming from an eeepc 900ha
Heat: Unlike every other small foot print netbook or notebook, this ASUS runs cool and stable.
Weight: Just over 3.7 pounds, light for what it is but not as light as most would think. Coming from a netbook, this guy is a bit more unwieldy but still thin and light for most 13″.
Trackpad: Interesting pad, pretty responsive and mutli-touch works very well with 3rd party synaptic drivers.
    CONS
Bloatware: It probably would have just been worth it to do a fresh install of windows 7, but I have read that after a fresh install it takes even more tinkering to get all the hot keys working again and same with the ASUS power modes. Uninstalling the crap-ware takes about an hour and is frustrating when most of those programs are not used by anyone I know.
Viewing angles: pretty terrible, takes some tinkering with the nvidia control panel to truly get the colors crisp and sharp, but it can be done, but then you need to be directly in front of the monitor.
Build quality: And here is the trade off why we are not paying macbook prices for the internals of a macbook. The plastic casing is study, but everything has gloss, which adds gross fingerprints to everything and makes viewing even harder if you’re close to a window on a sunny day or outside. There also is some separation between the two chassis halves in the front where the lights are for power and wifi and such.
Stickers: Took me about as long to get the stickers off as it did to uninstall bloatware, was not very happy with whoever glued them down or invented really great glue to terrorize new mobile computing owners.

Overall I can confidently give this product 4 stars, I am very happy with my purchase and the pro’s far outweigh the con’s in my book.

best for school! – aangita – Larenceville, GA
It took me a whole year to find a laptop I really wanted. Since early 2009 when netbooks were on their way to their demise, I was really looking for a laptop that was small but had good battery life and didnt have any unnecessary protruding extremities (like ugly external batteries!)There are much cheaper option, like the Acer, but they cannont not compare aesthetically to the asus.

I love this laptop, and I only paid 750 for it! It powerful enough to play the Sims, (YAY!), but light enough to last for 9 hours doing homework! Which is the real reason I bought it! I have so many online classes that I need to do them on the go and this laptop makes it possible!

It never gets too hot on your lap so you dont need to worry about overheating that much. Its small enough that it easily fits in a bookbag or totebag comfortably. The keys are comfortably spaced and the only one that need some getting used to are the side keys! (but that’s easy!)The function keys are easy to tell and very useful.

This is my first laptop and I am very glad I waited. Asus makes top products and I encourage anyone looking to buy a laptop to take the time to really research to you find exactly what you want!!

The only gripe I have is one of the small rubber bumpers on the bottom came off and now I cant find it! I am going to see if I can buy some more later.

Great Laptop, Good Performance, Great Looking, Some Flaws – Cristian Toader – Forest Hills, NY United States
This is a fantastic laptop. I have used it for two weeks now, loading up programs, playing games and just kicking it about to see what it can do. It can do a lot ! And I was happily surprised to see it perform adequate if not well in most areas. In turn for each consideration: Is it light and thin – Yes, at 3.74 it is both light thin, certainly lighter than a Macbook Pro (4.25lbs), but not lighter than a Vaio Z or Macbook Air, which are both 3 lbs flat. How is the scree? – A lot of complaints surfaced on the screen calling it horrible and lacking colour. The screen is just fine, full of color and certainly bright. Is it as nice as a Envy 13 or Macbook Pro 13, No, but it’s not that far off to call it a deal breaker. People have made too much of this and I get the sense that ASUS has improved their LEDs in this version. The hard drive is slow, no question about it but large enough that if you don’t absolutely pack it (75%+ usage), it is fast enough. Also keep in mind that a faster drive will also eat more battery, the conservation of which was important for this design. How is the processor? Very impressed with this little overclocking beast – I see the darn thing running at 2.1 sometimes, even though it’s just a 1.3 – could be my imagination but it does overclock to 1.7 for sure. It’s fast enough and I have Itunes, Photo Apps, Mail, multiple browsers open and everything still works just fine. The 4 gb of RAM I am sure has a lot to do with this. THEEE best part of the laptop is the video card. Holy Moly – for a machine this cheap, the discrete graphic card gives computers 2x as expensive a run for their money (before taking it all). It is good, a little too good for this machine. It runs games as well as my 512mb 8600M GT on my macbook pro – very impressive. The track pad is okay, not my favorite (yes, well inferior to macbook pros) but honestly, decent enough to use all day and once you get used to it, you’ll get the hang of the multi touch. In summary, for 0, it’s hard to get a better machine and since I have had a Dell and HP laptop die on me, I gave Asus a try. So far, I could not be happier.

Bigger Battery and a Better Warranty on the A1 Variant! – Simon Perkins – Santa Fe, NM United States
I recently ordered this notebook after seeing all the great reviews of it online. I was looking for a good thin and light laptop with reasonable performance that could also handle streaming HD video. The UL30VT seemed to hit the performance / price sweet spot perfectly. There are two variants currently available on Amazon – the UL30VT-X1 in black, and the UL30VT-A1 in silver. I picked this black one and hit the “Order” button. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards, I re-read the technical specs and realized that these two models are NOT the same!

First, the X1 ships with a 4400mAh battery, while the A1 whips with a newer 5600mAh battery. That’s 27% more batter life, which if you believe the manufacturer amounts to 2-3 extra hours runtime. On top of that, the A1 has a 2 year warranty, compared to the 1 year warranty offered with the X1. The two laptops sell for the same price within a couple of dollars at the time of writing. The only other difference between the machines is that the A1 is silver rather than black. So, unless you absolutely hate the silver color, the choice is pretty much a no-brainer…

I was a little too late to cancel and change my order, so I’m intending to send it back for a 100% refund as soon as it arrives. Meanwhile I’ve ordered the A1… Hoping to save someone else the same hassle!

Good features, but cover is already worn after 1 week – Eric A. Cutter – CA
I like the specs for the price and it has performed as advertised. After 1 week the silver top is already showing scratches and wear. I’ve had a few blue screens of death apparently related to an external webcam driver. The glossy screen is impossible to view in any amount of sunlight, say on the bus. The cursor goes into some long hourglass modes occasionally for reasons I cannot determine. For corporate users the express mode startup is essentially useless, no outlook, VPN, contacts, password manager, etc. Handles my large spreadsheets fine, which is the main thing for me.
