ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop (12 Hours of Battery Life) On Sale.

I used it a few months now. I’m very happy with the battery life, compatibility with Ubuntu Linux 10, and speed especially after installing a solid state drive. (OCZ Vertex)

All and all a great buy.

Problem:
- Before you buy it, make sure you look up the widespread problem with the intermittent wireless connections. more later.
- It comes with bloadware and the backup cd creator software simply doesn’t burn correctly with my external burner, so i have no way to reinstall windows without paying.
- the clam shell does not open all the way up 180 degrees, which makes it quite inconvenient.
- The edge is rough with plastic seams.

Took me quite a lot of pain to read up on the wireless problems.

There’s a widespread problem with the wireless card dropping connections. I tested many settings and found that there’s no problem with Linux, no problem if connecting to 801.11 b/g network but big problem with Windows 7 wireless N network. I got the badly named driver from Asus website which made it stop dropping network connection, but the connection is much slower than the same laptop running Linux, especially upload speed.

i wish I knew of a way to drop the connection speed on the wireless driver to b/g only, which could possibly solve the problem.

I might just get a half sized wireless driver from Intel and install it.

Overall, the laptop is not bad for the price. The 12-hours of battery life advertised on Amazon is misleading, the actually maximum battery life is 10-hours under extremely optimistic conditions. My biggest complaint with this laptop is the noisy hard drive which in addition to being an auditory distraction has a tendency to get stuck in a noisy chattering mode which locks-up the operating system if the laptop experiences sudden movements during hard drive activity.

Except for an inverted webcam image in Skype, the laptop works fine with the latest 10.4 version of Ubuntu.

I didn’t realize this at the time purchase, but this X5 version of the UL30A does not come with bluetooth.

The 1st one was bad out of the box with a clunking hard drive, send it back to Amazon and they replaced it with overnight ship. got the second one and all was good except the camera was viewing upside down. found that the wrong driver was installed. installed the correct driver on the CD and now everything works great. I really like the laptop.

I purchased this notebook as a 2nd household computer. My goal was to have a computer that was small and light enough to actually travel with, that had a significant battery life on a single charge, yet was large enough to use. So far, this has been perfect. I purchased as well the external cd/dvd drive since the ASUS UL30A-X5 doesn’t have one. Both are incredibly light weight, yet pack incredible power and speed. Very highly recommended.

ASUS U30JC-A1 13.3-Inch Laptop (Silver) On Sale.

To set the context: I have a two year old Dell desktop, a 4 year old Dell Latitude D400 (12″ screen with INtel Pentium M), and a 1 year old Dell Mini 9″ (Intel Atom). Like many, I no longer use my desktop, and the D400 was getting a bit long in the tooth. The Mini I found useful for taking on travel but was agonizingly slow for daily use with a very cramped keyboard. Even the D400 choked on multiple websites on occasion and multitasking was a chore. Of course, neither laptop had discrete graphics.

This new laptop has changed everything. To be fair, I would probably be raving about the better experience on any current laptop compared to the older Latitude. However, I really do think the U30JC, even though it’s under 00, is on the cutting edge. It sports Intel’s new Core i3, the successor to the Core 2 Duos (still around at good deals), and Nvidia discrete graphics. Critically, Nvidia’s Optimus allows for seamless switching to the integrated graphics when power saving is an issue.

I have not really taxed the computer yet and I will update the review down the road with thoughts on more heavy duty performance and battery life issues. But I imagine a number of folks are considering this model and would find initial thoughts helpful.

1) The build quality is very nice. The brushed metallic exterior and lack of plastic except on the screen bezel minimizes fingerprints. Very solid and looks great.

2) I prefer matte screens but the glossy screen in regular indoor conditions is great. I can see this be annoying in very bright light, however. Definition and video quality are leagues better than what I’m used to or have seen before in sub-00 laptops.

3) Performance is awesome on my limited trials. Hulu, youtube, multiple websites, quicken, windows media player. Everything pops up so quickly and the platform has no issue with lots and lots of multitasking. No stuttering, no lagging.

4) I really like the programmability and adjustability of everything. For example, maybe this is a Win 7 feature, but I really like the ability to assign “hibernate” to the power button.

5) This is definitely not a thin and light ultraportable. It’s a bit heavier than my D400 and bulkier because of the bigger screen. I am still going to travel on work with the Dell Mini. It would be OK for students but I think it’s too big (and performance overkill anyway) for most business travelers. I am viewing this as a desktop replacement and because I’m not going to be using this as my primary movie viewer or gaming platform, I really think 13″ is where I want to be at.

6) Battery life seems to be excellent. I have not put a video on endless loop to max out the battery (and you can read technical reviews that are now popping up). HOwever, just having the laptop idling and using it periodically throughout the day, it was lasting a looong time.

7) I am not a huge fan of the chiclet keyboard and prefer the regular keyboards with more travel and contours. However, I can see that this would be easier to clean and it’s not a bad typing experience. I don’t find the layout strange in any way.

I really hate touchpads (one reason why I stuck with Dell and its pointing stick). I found this touchpad hard to use and not uniformly sensitive, especially on the left side. This could be a slightly fiddly unit or could be my lack of experience. In any event, I am going to use a mouse. (Lack of integrated bluetooth on this laptop is a demerit).

9) very quiet, didn’t run very hot in my limited testing.

I found the whole Asus package to be stripped down and bare bones, which I actually liked. I didn’t think there was a ton of bloatware compared to other companies. The box was very small and spartan and there is no manual (it’s on the desktop). Some of the built-in Asus utilities are not fully explained. Most of the Intel/Nvidia and random stickers come off easily to provide a very clean, elegant look.

Overall, I believe now (and will update with additional thoughts) that this is a spectacular value. Yes, there are things that I would like changed, but I am very happy with the machine standing alone and then compared to the price point, it’s awesome.

Update: After a few weeks of usage, I definitely affirm my initial positive review. This went on a coast to coast business trip. Battery life was phenomenal (I still haven’t fully drained but it was lasting for hours off the cord when just doing basic businessy-web stuff). Traveled very well and was not as heavy to lug around as I expected. (although it is slightly heavier than it appears).

One of my keys popped out (my fault) and so I had my first encounter with Asus support. The support was fine and they are shipping me a new keyboard under warranty. So I am satisfied with my limited interaction with Asus US support. Speaking of the keyboard, I still am not in love with it. The chiclets slightly squeak sometimes and the limited travel does take some getting used to. But I can imagine some folks would prefer this kind of layout (very similar to Macbook).

Having the optical drive definitely came in handy for installing some software.

Finally, the glossy screen has turned out to be less annoying than I anticipated. Almost all of my usage has been indoors and not in bright sunlight. I would not recommend writing a novel in a sunny coffee shop, however.

The balance of this (performance, value, battery) is really perfect for me.

I just got the ASUS U30JC-A1 a few days ago and have had a few days to play around with it.

The Good:

1. Design/Aesthetics & Construction/Build-quality

This is a really nice looking/feeling notebook! The brushed aluminum lid is very, dare I say it, ‘high-end’ appearing, and the matching aluminum palm rest is a nice touch. Very simple, understated, yet elegant design usually not seen outside of Apple’s products. Yes, the screen and black bezel is glossy but I rather like it like that, it’s not bad at all indoors as long as you don’t have bright light shining on it. Also, very solid build-quality. No flex in the keyboard or lid and sturdy hinges as well. The chicklet style keyboard has nice matte keys with well thought out layout (arrow keys, delete key in the corner, function key to adjust volume, etc.).

2. Screen

1366×768 resolution LED backlit screen (16×9 aspect ratio) looks really good. The vertical viewing angles aren’t great, but acceptable (a good 15 degrees), and the horizontal viewing angles are wide enough to allow you and your friend to sit side by side and watch a movie on it. And again yes, it is glossy, but really very usable.

3. Performance/Hardware

With the non-ULV Core i3 (350M) processor, the U30JC is a good performer. You can check out the multiple reviews online to see that it stacks up very well against most comparable notebooks. With the 64-bit Windows 7 and 4gb DDR3 RAM, multitasking is a joy. The graphics system (integrated graphics + NVIDIA 310M with 512mb VRAM and Optimus auto-switching technology) is great and allows for seamless transition between integrated and dedicated graphics, depending on the need, and apparently helps with the battery life. I am not much of a gamer but I tested Left 4 Dead (first one) and the graphics seem to perform rather well.

4. Optical Drive

Yes, you read that right, I think it’s nice to have an optical drive in a notebook even if it adds to the bulk a bit. That said, many people would prefer not to have one, in which case you can wait for the optical drive-less U33JC (with Core i5) that should be coming to the US eventually…

5. Battery Life/Power Management

I have not done any serious battery life tests, but with casual usage with wifi internet browsing, the U30JC will easily get some six plus hours out of it. I would not count on getting 9.5 hours as advertised unless using really basic settings (no wifi, etc.). There are also multiple power management settings that let you customize exactly how you want battery usage to be managed, which is great. You can even choose integrated vs dedicated graphics for every program you have installed if you want, in addition to the usual backlight, hibernate, etc., settings.

6. Great Warranty

Pretty great warranty, including 2-years coverage (with 3-day turnaround time and free return shipping) and 1-year accidental damage coverage too!

7. Speakers

They actually sound pretty decent for a notebook.

8. Miscellaneous

The HDMI port is nice to have (and pretty standard), as well as three USB 2.0 inputs and the SD/MS/XD card reader.

The Not So Good (Or Could Have Been Better):

1. Bulk/Weight

Yes, it is a bit thick and a bit heavy, but at the price point it is selling for you can’t really expect it to be MacBook Air thin with a SSD, etc. That said though, the notebook is very ‘carry-able’ and I have no problem putting it in my backpack for a night on the town.

2. No Firewire/USB 3.0

I wish they could have put one in, but alas, no firewire or USB 3.0 ports.

3. 0.3MP Webcam

It would have been nice to have a bit better, higher resolution webcam, but the one they include does work fine.

4. No Blu-ray drive

If they’re going to put in a bulky optical drive, it would have been nice to have a blu-ray drive (since there is an HDMI port) and be able to use the U30JC as a HTPC. But at this price point, again, it’s wishful thinking.

Overall:

I think this is a fantastic notebook that really exudes quality and has a good balance between performance, portability, and battery life. It is not perfect, but I am quite satisfied with it thus far and would definitely get this one again!

Review from an ex-Dell XPS M1330 User – loungesong – California, USA
I’ve been using a Dell XPS M1330 since January 2008. It was my favorite computer, ever. Unfortunately I was a victim of the nVidia GPU overheat problem and had my motherboard and GPU replaced five times. I got a lot of work done on the road with that computer with my Verizon Data Card.

After Dell wouldn’t fix my XPS M1330 anymore and they gave me my money back, I started shopping for a 13″ performance system. I waited a few weeks for the U30JC to get released. So far I’ve been happy with the system, here are some of my observations:

Negatives:

1. No mini PCI-E slot or extra antenna for my Verizon wireless card. I’m using the Verizon MIFI 2200 device and I’m not happy with it. The speed is only 25% of what I was getting. I’m going to get a USB Adapter instead.

2. No dual headphone jacks. Was great for sharing a movie.

3. Speakers and headphone jacks are not as loud as the M1330. I like to use my laptop speakers in the morning to listen to podcasts in the morning and the speakers are noticeably quieter than the M1330.

4. Touchpad is overly complicated. It doesn’t have a right click button. I “get” the triple finger-tap right click. However I think they could have split the long click button and allowed the user to select if they wanted it to function traditionally or this new way. It’s so big that my thumbs occasionally hit it and my cursor goes flying. I’m sure I’ll get over this.

Positives:

1. The battery life is incredible. I got almost 6 hours of continuous use with Wi-Fi running with heavy browsing, office documents, iTunes (even downloaded some music), and outlook email.

2. Asus bloatware is better than Dell’s. I immediately installed Windows 7 Ultimate and used the Asus driver CD to get their required apps on the system. The various utilities load quick, are intuitive, and don’t seem to affect performance.

3. Build quality/design is better. The aluminum palm rest gets the job done (no fingerprints). Although I don’t love the shiny black bezel around the LCD (it attracts lint), it has perfectly placed standoffs to prevent the keyboard from tattooing itself in the screen (one of my biggest complaints about the M1330).

4. Extremely quiet, not hot. Again, two big gripes for the M1330.

For the price I think this system is a great value. However no mini-PCI is a major bummer. There isn’t any competition today in this price range in my opinion.

Great all around laptop. Portable, powerful, affordable. – Magellan – NC
I received my laptop last week. Since getting it I have uninstalled bloatware and added internet security, Office 2007, visual studio and warhammer online.
While I was installing Office 2007, I was updating Warhammer, browsing the internet with both IE and chrome and the antivirus was doing a scan. This laptop handled all of that simultaneously without a problem.

I was looking for a laptop for:
> work trips
> trips for fun (motorcycle/camping etc.)
> college classes (I use it in place of pen/paper for notes)

I bought a netbook last year before school started and found it to be very helpful for class but I hated waiting for it to load programs, start up etc. Also in some classes I would need a a web browser, power point, word and visual open…which was more than it was designed to handle.

Before a two week long trip this past summer, I bought a bargain gaming laptop. Awesome fast but crappy battery life.

Asus N10j (one of last years high speed netbooks) for school and lite trips.
+ Excellent portability
– Slow start up
– Atom processor sucks for multi tasking

Asus G51vx for gaming on the go (15.6″ format, good video card).
+ Plays the same games my desktop will
– Not so portable
– 1.4 hour battery life really sucks

So last month when my wife’s laptop died I started looking for a compromise laptop so that I could hand down one of the others to my wife:)

I was looking real hard at the Alienware M11x but was not enamored with the looks of it.
I was also looking at some Sony laptops but was reading horrible stories of their warranty coverage with screens breaking
(too much flex in their design)
I liked the Asus UL30 series but was unhappy with some of the reports of screen quality.

Then the Asus U30jc came out…and the reviews were very glowing…and they are dead on.

Asus U30jc:
+ Plays many of the games I do on my desktop
+ Battery: ~7 hours of web surfing or 3 hours of gaming
+ Nice looking, very professional, best looking laptop I’ve owned
+ Screen is decent and large enough to actually use
– No Express card slot for my data card…

The fit and finish are great, it feels solid, the screen looks good, it plays the games I play most, it fits on my desk at school
and in the tailbag of my motorcycle, I can use it all day without having to plug in.

It is the best compromise of portability, usefulness and price that I could find.

Maybe I’ll give both of the others to the wife…mmmm…nah.

ASUS UL30A-X3 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop – Over 11 Hours of Battery Life On Sale.

I’ve had this laptop for about a week now and overall I’m very satisfied. I was considering this one, the ACER 3810 and the ASUS UL30A-A1. For about 0 less than the ACER and 0 less than the ASUS UL30A-A1, you get the same level of CPU performance and sacrifice on the drive size and Bluetooth (if you do your homework, you’ll see that on the ASUS website, the X3 model does not have Bluetooth whilet the A1 one does). I bought a Cirago USB adapter off of Amazon for about for the bluetooth functionality. I also bought the Samsung external USB optical drive, Microsoft Bluetooth mouse and a Case Logic Neoprene sleeve (13 inch in black). All work very well togther and the sleeve fits perfectly.

Relative to the keyboard, it’s fine – not the best and not the worst. The trackpad issues was noted on some on-line magazine reviews and altogether it shouldn’t be an issue after usng it for a while. As for other reviews identifying a “con” for a lack of an optical drive, my comment is – if you were buying this laptop for it’s price, wright and thickness, isn’t the lack of an optical drive a “Pro”?

Relative to the battery performance, if you leave it in high performance, the battery life will be abount half the advertised life which is still fantastic (as I type, the battery is 66% charged with 4 hours, 58 minutes remaining). Again, I rely on on-line magazine’s review of a product and many view the battey life as extremely good testing at over 8 hours and certainly better than the ACER.

I am dissappointed with Amazon over the missing case and mouse but I am overlooking that in my rating of the product. Also, I did use 2 day shipping with Amazon Prime and the computer was delivered the next day.

If you don’t get the Asus get something with the Ultra low Voltage Intel processor like the UL series has. It has the power of a full laptop and the portability and battery life of a net book. NOT A NET BOOK. Since it isn’t published any where else the battery it ships with is a low profile battery and doesn’t add to the thickness at all.

I love this laptop, it has a lot of new software developed by Asus that I find helpful, along with a 8 sec internet, picture, pdf, music portal quick start up (more like 15 sec). Battery life CAN BE 10+ HRS espaesially if you use the quick start feature a lot because you can avoid hibernating and resuming a lot.

The mouse pad however I don’t love because it seems to be a little too glossy for you finger to glide on it and not as responsive as I would like. The mouse pad has a cool software feature by Asus. They made an easy to use scroll, pop-up menu, zoom, open programs (or what-ever you want to set it as) built in to the mouse pad. I think that is why the sensitivity is kind of low.

I gave it five stars because I feel like for the price it cant be beat. ~200 dollars less than a student offer Mac-book, ~400 less than a reg Mac-book, and less than half the price of a Mac-book pro. Also i think it’s better than any other quality windows laptop (dell, hp are all i can speak for) Ive seen in price range.

The laptop is fine it runs cooler then my HP and battery life is not quite 11 hours but long enough for my use. My complaint is I’ve mailed the warrenty card as directed and had it returned, the address that was printed on the warrenty card is not correct and there is no phone number in the US you can reach. My upgrade to window 7 required me to mail,fax or e-mail to a chinese address.I have faxed then e-mail with no response from ASUS.

Great laptop so far. Excellent battery life. This was a migration from the ASUS 1000H, so small size was not an issue. In fact the screen and keyboard seem huge in comparison.

Three small complaints / notes about the system, however. One, the screen has a somewhat narrow view angle. (Not necessarily a problem, but very noticeable when sitting on a desk and you walk up to it.) Two, the facial recognition software works great sometimes and not so great at others. And three the battery / back side of the laptop feels a little soft/squeezable. (It doesn’t affect the machine at all, but is noticeable when you carry the closed unit and it feels like there is play in the back hinge area.)

Other than that, it is a great unit, with a very generous standard warranty that includes 1 year of accidental damage coverage. I would buy again.

Simple personal feeling about this Asus UX30

The Good side

1. Good CPU speed, I’m a student using the laptop mainly for homework/study/web/movies/youtube. It’s not a lighting speed one but I’m totally happy with it’s performance — no lag! I think the 4GB ram definitely help.

2. Super thin and sleek outlook and excellent built quality. Asus built the laptop with brushed aluminum on the top and high-end plastic on the bottom, which make it feels like you are holding a xxx latop ,

3. Surprise how light the latop is, I can spin it with my finger! no kidding~ Also the power adapter is the smallest I’ve ever seen, the adapter is about the length of a lighter and 3 times of it’s size and super light as well.

4. Crispy screen playing 1080p video smoothly, No problem using HDMI output on 56inches TV.

5. I think a lot of people would concern about the battery life, well, I can honestly tell you it’s really not that bad, for normal web browsing it can last 4.5hrs using the battery saving mode, and don’t be scared by hearing battery saving equal to low performance, in fact I just feel the same as the high performance mode except using dimmer screen brightness. The battery is in fact a high end POLYMER battery instead of standard one on other laptops, it’s more reliable and has longer life.

6. Asus Express Gate installed. EG let you get on internet do most stuff without booting the windows, it’s Linux based os customized for Asus laptop. As advertised get connected online and start browsing the web in 8 Sec (tested, takes 6sec! ^^)

The Bad side

1. Weak microphone, I use the video chat on Skype and live messenger a lot, the microphone just doesn’t useful as the one who you chat with couldn’t hear any but noise from you. Disappointed. Problem Solved by bought a usb audio interface for .99, it work perfectly now.

2. It would be a little tough to get used to the touch pad, but in few days, you’ll be OK and enjoy, still cant compare to Mac’s touch pad.

Overall, it’s a great value to purchase this notebook, I’m happy using it everyday in school and home. everything just great. Highly recommended for student or people who love to use their laptop the way I do, Web browsing/homework/movies/Youtube/video chat/

The asus ux30 is just drop dead gorgeous. I take it to class where it competes with the laptops of 99 other students and boy does it get a lot of compliments. This certainly draws attention wherever you take it.

Pros
- beautiful design: super thin, brushed aluminum, hidden ports keep it “clean-looking,” flush screen gives it elegance
- weight: super light, easy to just carry around in your hand or plop it inside your handbag
- keyboard: chiclet-style is a lot easier to type on, but that’s just my personal preference
- windows 7, if you don’t already have it, you gotta try it
- webcam: mine came with a 1.3mg webcam even though Amazon’s description said .3mg so I don’t know what’s the deal with that
- 2 year global warranty

Cons
- the touchpad was almost unbearable at first. but after some time I got used to it.
- battery life is not as great as other asus models but mine lasted about 3 hours without any power-saving settings so that’s good enough for me.
- processor is alright but don’t expect to do much gaming or other demanding stuff.

the bottom line — If you want a powerful computer that supports extensive gaming and has a super long battery life, this isn’t for you. But if you’re like me and you’re willing to overlook some of the shortcomings (like that awful trackpad) because you want something sleek and sexy that will turn a lot of heads, you can’t go wrong with this. I hang around a lot of mac freaks and this laptop puts their macbooks to shame.

When I got the laptop I was very happy. I’ve only had it for two days, but already the right mouse button on the pad has lost its “click,” very annoying since I JUST got it. It’s not such a big deal since it still works, but it’s the reason I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars.

Battery life is so-so, but it’s a three cell battery so I guess I can’t expect much, it’s not horrible, but don’t stray too far from an outlet. Right now, not doing anything on the laptop and on some serious battery saving options, I have a little over 5 hours of juice. If you’re surfing the web, or doing anything else you can expect about 4 to 4.5 hours on a full charge.

The keyboard is great! I love typing on it, there’s no flex and it feels like quality. I have medium sized hands and it’s perfect for me.

It should be noted that the top of the laptop is definitely brushed aluminum and the bottom is definitely plastic. I had read some reviews (maybe they had pre-production models?) where they said the top and bottom were metal. This is not the case. The laptop weighs in at just over 3 pounds 5 ounces in case anyone was wondering.

The laptop looks great and I’ve already gotten a few compliments on it. It boots up pretty quickly and programs load pretty fast. It doesn’t come loaded with a bunch of crap software either. I thought I was going to have to format and start clean, but it only came with some software from asus which is convenient for the laptop and I don’t feel the need to delete. It came with a free trail of some sort of virus detector (not Mcaffee, thank god) which was easy enough to remove.

Finger prints will be visible on the lid if you’re eating french fries and have really greasy fingers. Otherwise the lid tends to stay pretty clean!

That’s all I can think of to write at the moment. I might come back in a month with an update. I might also send this back to Asus to fix the mouse pad buttons because it’s going to drive my OCD crazy. Except for the annoying lack of quality in the mouse pad buttons, I’m very happy with the laptop over-all and would recommend it to other people.

finally found my perfect laptop – Nghi Mai –
I own both the UL30A-A2 and the UX30-A1. The UX is MUCH lighter than the UL and look so much better. Since all the ports are hidden, the laptop has a very clean look. What i love most about the UX is that the screen is flushed making it look very elegant. The screen brightness is the same as the UL. The UX is also thinner. Battery life is ok, not as great as on the UL but i don’t mind since i bought this mainly because of the exterior. The brushed aluminum makes the laptop feels so much more expensive than it really is. One other thing, the hard drive and battery are not removable. They have been sealed by Asus so if having a removable battery is important to you, you should look at other models.

It just won’t work – Sergio Adolfo Montoya –
I received the laptop, and as soon as I opened the box I realized that it wasn’t a plain blue laptop like shown on MSI and Amazon but rather a sparkly blue which, being male, I did not like at all. Then I tried to turn it on and get it to run. The msi logo appears and then nothing else happened, and I never got to get windows running, as it only comes with some blank DVDs so that the user creates the recovery discs. Would have created them if windows had runned. Had to return it, and now I see the number of available items is 4 (3 when I bought mine) so I guess someone else had to return it as well.

I got this laptop just before Christmas and am in love with it. The keyboard and touchscreen are the best and the performance is amazing. I have downloaded DVD’s to the hard drive so I do not miss having a built in optical drive in the least. The best part is I made a long drive from Massachusetts to Tennessee for Christmas and when I was not driving I was watching movies. Sure helped pass the time. Ane the best part is I watched 2 movies and an hour tv show and still had over 3 hours of battery life left!!! This laptopt has it all and I can tell you I did tons of research before I bought.

ASUS UL30Vt-X1 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop (11 Hours of Battery Life) On Sale.

If you want a portable notebook with the power of larger laptop and the battery power of a netbook, this is best price to performance ratio I have been able to find.
Pros
13″ LED LCD display: granted the VIEWING ANGLES are limited, but with tweaking through nvidia’s control panel the monitor is very crisp.
Intel SU7300: Awesome compromise between power and performance, can be overclocked well for gaming and underclocked for better battery performance. Windows 7 is very snappy and mutli-tasking (at least watching movies while working a word doc and surfing the web) is smooth.
4gb or RAM: Works well enough and I don’t see the need for an expensive upgrade.
500gb drive at 5400RPM: Not the best, but certainly not the worst, I have heard that this drive excessively crackles but have not experienced it as of this writing. Wish it came with a 120 SSD but then the notebook would be as expensive as a macbook.
NVidia G210M Graphics: discrete graphics in a 13″ body….HAWT. Again, cheapest price to performance, only other discrete graphics in a notebook form of this size is the Alienware M11X otherwise you get the ATI Radeon 3200 or Intel integrated graphics. The Nvidia G210M will play HD without stuttering and most current games on reasonable settings.
Keyboard:n Full island style keyboard is nice, some flex but overall very nice to work on coming from an eeepc 900ha
Heat: Unlike every other small foot print netbook or notebook, this ASUS runs cool and stable.
Weight: Just over 3.7 pounds, light for what it is but not as light as most would think. Coming from a netbook, this guy is a bit more unwieldy but still thin and light for most 13″.
Trackpad: Interesting pad, pretty responsive and mutli-touch works very well with 3rd party synaptic drivers.
CONS
Bloatware: It probably would have just been worth it to do a fresh install of windows 7, but I have read that after a fresh install it takes even more tinkering to get all the hot keys working again and same with the ASUS power modes. Uninstalling the crap-ware takes about an hour and is frustrating when most of those programs are not used by anyone I know.
Viewing angles: pretty terrible, takes some tinkering with the nvidia control panel to truly get the colors crisp and sharp, but it can be done, but then you need to be directly in front of the monitor.
Build quality: And here is the trade off why we are not paying macbook prices for the internals of a macbook. The plastic casing is study, but everything has gloss, which adds gross fingerprints to everything and makes viewing even harder if you’re close to a window on a sunny day or outside. There also is some separation between the two chassis halves in the front where the lights are for power and wifi and such.
Stickers: Took me about as long to get the stickers off as it did to uninstall bloatware, was not very happy with whoever glued them down or invented really great glue to terrorize new mobile computing owners.

Overall I can confidently give this product 4 stars, I am very happy with my purchase and the pro’s far outweigh the con’s in my book.

It took me a whole year to find a laptop I really wanted. Since early 2009 when netbooks were on their way to their demise, I was really looking for a laptop that was small but had good battery life and didnt have any unnecessary protruding extremities (like ugly external batteries!)There are much cheaper option, like the Acer, but they cannont not compare aesthetically to the asus.

I love this laptop, and I only paid 750 for it! It powerful enough to play the Sims, (YAY!), but light enough to last for 9 hours doing homework! Which is the real reason I bought it! I have so many online classes that I need to do them on the go and this laptop makes it possible!

It never gets too hot on your lap so you dont need to worry about overheating that much. Its small enough that it easily fits in a bookbag or totebag comfortably. The keys are comfortably spaced and the only one that need some getting used to are the side keys! (but that’s easy!)The function keys are easy to tell and very useful.

This is my first laptop and I am very glad I waited. Asus makes top products and I encourage anyone looking to buy a laptop to take the time to really research to you find exactly what you want!!

The only gripe I have is one of the small rubber bumpers on the bottom came off and now I cant find it! I am going to see if I can buy some more later.

This is a fantastic laptop. I have used it for two weeks now, loading up programs, playing games and just kicking it about to see what it can do. It can do a lot ! And I was happily surprised to see it perform adequate if not well in most areas. In turn for each consideration: Is it light and thin – Yes, at 3.74 it is both light thin, certainly lighter than a Macbook Pro (4.25lbs), but not lighter than a Vaio Z or Macbook Air, which are both 3 lbs flat. How is the scree? – A lot of complaints surfaced on the screen calling it horrible and lacking colour. The screen is just fine, full of color and certainly bright. Is it as nice as a Envy 13 or Macbook Pro 13, No, but it’s not that far off to call it a deal breaker. People have made too much of this and I get the sense that ASUS has improved their LEDs in this version. The hard drive is slow, no question about it but large enough that if you don’t absolutely pack it (75%+ usage), it is fast enough. Also keep in mind that a faster drive will also eat more battery, the conservation of which was important for this design. How is the processor? Very impressed with this little overclocking beast – I see the darn thing running at 2.1 sometimes, even though it’s just a 1.3 – could be my imagination but it does overclock to 1.7 for sure. It’s fast enough and I have Itunes, Photo Apps, Mail, multiple browsers open and everything still works just fine. The 4 gb of RAM I am sure has a lot to do with this. THEEE best part of the laptop is the video card. Holy Moly – for a machine this cheap, the discrete graphic card gives computers 2x as expensive a run for their money (before taking it all). It is good, a little too good for this machine. It runs games as well as my 512mb 8600M GT on my macbook pro – very impressive. The track pad is okay, not my favorite (yes, well inferior to macbook pros) but honestly, decent enough to use all day and once you get used to it, you’ll get the hang of the multi touch. In summary, for 0, it’s hard to get a better machine and since I have had a Dell and HP laptop die on me, I gave Asus a try. So far, I could not be happier.

Bigger Battery and a Better Warranty on the A1 Variant! – Simon Perkins – Santa Fe, NM United States
I recently ordered this notebook after seeing all the great reviews of it online. I was looking for a good thin and light laptop with reasonable performance that could also handle streaming HD video. The UL30VT seemed to hit the performance / price sweet spot perfectly. There are two variants currently available on Amazon – the UL30VT-X1 in black, and the UL30VT-A1 in silver. I picked this black one and hit the “Order” button. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards, I re-read the technical specs and realized that these two models are NOT the same!

First, the X1 ships with a 4400mAh battery, while the A1 whips with a newer 5600mAh battery. That’s 27% more batter life, which if you believe the manufacturer amounts to 2-3 extra hours runtime. On top of that, the A1 has a 2 year warranty, compared to the 1 year warranty offered with the X1. The two laptops sell for the same price within a couple of dollars at the time of writing. The only other difference between the machines is that the A1 is silver rather than black. So, unless you absolutely hate the silver color, the choice is pretty much a no-brainer…

I was a little too late to cancel and change my order, so I’m intending to send it back for a 100% refund as soon as it arrives. Meanwhile I’ve ordered the A1… Hoping to save someone else the same hassle!

I like the specs for the price and it has performed as advertised. After 1 week the silver top is already showing scratches and wear. I’ve had a few blue screens of death apparently related to an external webcam driver. The glossy screen is impossible to view in any amount of sunlight, say on the bus. The cursor goes into some long hourglass modes occasionally for reasons I cannot determine. For corporate users the express mode startup is essentially useless, no outlook, VPN, contacts, password manager, etc. Handles my large spreadsheets fine, which is the main thing for me.

ASUS UL30A-A2 Thin and Light 13-3-Inch Silver Laptop – 12 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) On Sale.

I’d been trying to decide which netbook or thin & light notebook to purchase since hearing that some manufacturers were going to release netbooks with 12″ screens. I’d purchased a Samsung NC10 for my college bound son late in 2008. I liked the concept of netbooks but realized I’d want a bigger keyboard as well as long battery life. I almost got one of the 12″ netbooks but I’m glad I decided to spend more money for the UL20A-A2. I’ve had mine for four weeks today and I’m very happy with it.

It’s not a perfect notebook but it fits my needs well. Its ULV processor seems more powerful and adaptable than the Intel Atom. The low power processor may be inappropriate for those whose primary uses include gaming or intensive complex calculations or instructions, but it’s been fine for word processing and educational applications from the web as well as general web browsing and email. It has great battery life. I’ve been getting over 8 hours under ‘balanced’ power management with wi-fi connections which is more than I expected. I could probably work longer on battery power with power settings for maximum battery life. I love the full sized keyboard, though the ‘chicklet’ or island style is different than I’ve been accustomed to, it works well and feels fine to me. There’s some slight keyboard flex but it doesn’t feel excessive and isn’t distracting to me. The 13.3 screen is big enough for my needs and has fine resolution. I prefer matte to glossy screens but I was willing to compromise and haven’t found the screen reflection to be too distracting. I’ve been able to position the notebook to avoid excessive reflected glare. The resolution and color saturation seem excellent to me; it’s a beautiful screen. Streaming video from Hulu and YouTube have worked fine for me in limited testing. The aluminum cover and overall lines give the notebook a clean aesthetic appeal. I haven’t needed gaming quality graphics so I’m not bothered by the integrated graphics controller’s limited capabilities — they are sufficient for my needs. I bought an ASUS external CD/DVD drive to be able to load software and record back ups. I didn’t use the CD/DVD on my previous notebook computers often; so not having one affords increased battery power, and reduces both complexity and weight which adds to my satisfaction. The built-in touch pad is what I term ‘twitchy’ and it’s position sometimes disrupts typing if either thumb brushes it. I solved that difficulty by using a Logitech USB optical travel mouse, and setting the control panel to disable the touch pad with the mouse is plugged in.

Other reviewers have been critical of the wi-fi card / reception but I have not experienced any serious problems connecting to either our home or public wi-fi networks. It’s possible that a better antenna would improve reception or perhaps my unit got a better antenna than those of people who have had problems. I’m glad the unit comes with Windows 7, it seems to be an improvement to XP (which I like). I haven’t used Windows VISTA enough to compare it with 7. I highly recommend this product to those who want a general purpose light thin notebook with more power and better screen and keyboard than a netbook without the unnecessary features of a business or gaming class notebook. A great notebook for high school & college students (who don’t need high resolution gaming graphics), elementary & secondary teachers and others who need light mobile computing. For those who need more graphics options but who don’t need a built in CD/DVD drive I understand the newer UL30vt has switchable graphics with a similar battery life for a slightly but not exorbitantly higher price. I was stretching my budget to get the UL30A and so far haven’t needed the graphics power so I am quite happy with my purchase.

I’ve owned several laptops in the past five years: two Dells, an HP, a Macbook Pro, a Samsung and a Lenovo Thinkpad. I’ve always been disappointed in some way or another with them.
Recently i purchased the Asus Silver and have been thoroughly impressed. Very nicely built and feels solid. Ultra light weight and super long battery life make it seem like a cell phone – charge it overnight and use it all day. It’s as good (and better in some ways) as the Macbook i had and at a fraction of the cost.
I’m not a techie, but i do use the Adobe CS4 suite daily and this laptop handles it well. I’ve also seen that with the free downloads available these days (iTunes, Picassa, Sketchup, Google Docs) it’s almost possible to be free of paid software.
As someone who has worked on many different laptops over the years, I would highly recommend this one.

Where can I start?
I’ve a small 10″ Asus 1005 and love the size and battery, but when I needed to work a few hours hated that the screen was TOO small. Everything change with this incredible, beautiful, light-weight, thin and smooth at thouch laptop.
Last monday had to work all day with a proyect and turned on the computer at 11 am and at 8 pm still had 20% of the charge! (I’ve used wireless, usb drives, usb hdd and sound). Because of my daily routine, I see many customers in an average day, so carrying the laptop is a must to me and the real weight of this Asus is perfect for my back (in my back pack also carry a lot of things, but never again the ac adapter).
The screen is perfect in size and in bright, but always hated the reflecting surface of it in an roofless space. Totally loved that came with the fast express gate (10 secs) that allows me to send a quick email or have a chat without turning the whole windows.
The touch and feel of the surface is excelent. A small detail, but give me the idea that the Asus people thinks is that they put a transparent sticker over the windows licence tag that’s under the computer (this is always damaged ’cause of the use and also ’cause the Microsoft people makes it in cheap paper).
If you want a computer where you can do all things (even photoshop, but no gaming), go ahead, this is a sure thing. OH! It came with 2 YEARS warranty and 1 YEAR warranty (you can extend up to two years just registering the laptop in the asus webpage and sending the invoice to them) against accidents, spills, etc!!!! WOW!!!!

Now the whole family is on asus laptops and we are very happy with them. the software is friendly and the keyboard is comfortable except the arrow keys are a little cramped. asus has a nice web storage package that comes free on some of the laptops that is nice too.
